Tipperary Studies is delighted to host the National Archive's exhibition 'The Story of Us: Census 1926' In the Source Gallery, Thurles from the 3rd - 21st November.

This is a landmark exhibition marking the 2026 release of census records for 1926. It explores the world reflected in the census and reveals what life was like in 1926: in towns and cities, across rural communities and islands, from crowded urban tenements to the mansions of the aristocracy.

Using contemporary documents and photographs, audio‑visual displays and — at its heart — the census returns themselves, the exhibition presents a vivid portrait of Ireland a century ago. Visitors will encounter stories of work and daily life, language and culture, sport and entertainment, religion, gender and the social realities of a newly independent state.

The exhibition forms part of a major public programme presented by the National Archives.

Thanks to everyone who came along to Tipperary Studies first lecture of the new season last night. John Flannery was excellent on his topic, the auxiliary workhouses of Ireland. These were opened during the famine, often in unsuitable, old industrial buildings with few facilities which resulted in terrible tragedies in more than one instance.

Season twenty is of to a flying start and there are five more lectures in store

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 20th, when we welcome local historian John Flannery for our first lecture of the 26/27 series: "'Might be better designated a slaughterhouse' - Auxiliary Workhouses in Ireland."

Drawing on reports from the Tipperary Vindicator in 1849, John will shine a light on the grim reality of Ireland's Auxiliary Workhouses. He'll look at the shocking conditions that earned Nenagh's Brewery Auxiliary Workhouse the chilling description of a "receptacle of woe".
The talk will also examine just how unsuitable many of the buildings used actually were, before turning to two harrowing tragedies reported in the Limerick Chronicle the following year which claimed the lives of fifty-six young girls and women in Killarney and Limerick.
John Flannery is a local historian with a strong interest in Irish Land Agitation, the Encumbered Estates, Irish Landed Estates and Irish Revolutionary History. He holds an MA in the History of Family from the University of Limerick, is a former President of the Ormond Historical Society, Nenagh, and a founding member of Tipperary in the Decade of Revolution.
Where; The Source Gallery, Thurles
When; 7pm (refreshments served from 6.30pm)
Free Lecture
All are welcome.

Our latest Spotify episode features a lecture by Dr. Salvador Ryan, originally delivered in 2020 during the pandemic, exploring Irish traditions around death and dying.
While the subject is deeply solemn, Dr. Ryan weaves in moments of gentle humour and shares remarkable stories that bring these customs to life.

Funeral traditions remain a vital part of community life here in Tipperary and across Ireland, and this conversation captures why they continue to resonate.
Listen now on Spotify and let us know which story or tradition stood out to you.
