The Council’s emergency number will be available overnight for the duration of the weather warning and any weather related issues can be reported to 066 7183588.

STORM AUSTEN - Update from Kerry County Council:

Kerry County Council is advising members of the public and all road users to expect disruption and possible flooding tonight and during the Friday morning commute as a result of Storm Austen.

An Orange weather warning for rain comes into effect for Kerry at 10pm on Thursday and expires at 5am on Friday. A Yellow warning for wind will be in effect from 7pm on Thursday to 10am on Friday.
Kerry County Council is advising motorists to expect surface water and flooding as well as the possibility of fallen trees and debris on many routes during tonight and Friday morning.

Council crews will be on standby to deal with any problems which arise. The Council’s emergency number will be available overnight for the duration of the weather warning and any weather related issues can be reported to 066 7183588.

Sandbags are being distributed to areas which are vulnerable to flooding.

Kerry County Council is also monitoring the weather forecasts for the weekend and will issue further advisories in due course.

📢 On-going Training at Kerry Civil Defence! 🚑🚤

Our volunteers have been actively developing and enhancing their skills through a wide range of training programmes in recent weeks.

✅ Community First Responder (CFR) Training
✅ Sonar Training in Skibbereen alongside our colleagues in Cork West Civil Defence.
✅ Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) Training
✅ Boat Training to strengthen our water-based response capabilities
✅ Farmers FIRST Programme in Currans, delivered by UCC School of Medicine. Cork West Civil Defence and Kerry Civil Defence were delighted to be involved in this brilliant learning opportunity.

Continuous training ensures our volunteers remain prepared to support our communities when needed, whether responding to emergencies, assisting in search and rescue operations, or providing support at local events.

A sincere thank you to all instructors, partner agencies, and volunteers for their commitment and dedication.

🚑🔎 Busy Week for Kerry Civil Defence Volunteers 🔎🚑

Over the past week, Kerry Civil Defence volunteers provided cover for 7 days of the Listowel Races, from Sunday through to last Saturday. Our teams were on hand throughout the event, helping to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all attendees.
We were delighted to be assisted by our friends from Cork North and East Civil Defence and Irish Red Cross Mallow-Charleville Unit/Branch. A sincere thank you to their volunteers for their support and professionalism throughout the week.
A huge thank you also goes to all of our own volunteers, who performed admirably over the seven days, giving their time and commitment to support this major event.

On Tuesday night, while race week was ongoing, we were also tasked by An Garda Síochána Kerry to assist in a missing person search. Our Drone Team and Search Responders were deployed alongside An Garda Síochána and the Irish Coast Guard. We are very pleased to report that the person was located alive and safe, thanks to the coordinated efforts of all agencies involved.
Thank you to everyone who answered the call and worked together to achieve a positive outcome. 👏

🏃‍♂️🏅 Run Di**le 2026 🏅🏃‍♀️

A very early start on Saturday morning for our Civil Defence volunteers supporting the Di**le Marathon.
We had just under 30 volunteers on duty throughout the event, providing comprehensive support to organisers, participants and spectators. Resources deployed included our ambulances, Bike Unit, Communications Team, and Welfare Unit (Mobile Kitchen), ensuring cover was available across the course from start to finish.
A special thank you to our colleagues from Cork West Civil Defence, who provided an ambulance crew and worked alongside our team throughout the day.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Run Di**le organisers for their professionalism and partnership in delivering another fantastic event.
Finally, a huge thank you to all our volunteers who gave up their Saturday, started before dawn, and worked tirelessly throughout the day to support this wonderful event. Your dedication and professionalism make these events possible.

🤝 Joint Training Exercise at Listowel Racecourse 🚤🚑🚒

Our volunteers recently took part in a successful joint exercise with Listowel Fire and Rescue at the Listowel Racecourse, providing a valuable opportunity to test and develop our emergency response capabilities in a realistic setting.
During the exercise, our Boat Crew, First Aid Crews, and Ambulance Crews were deployed to various locations around the racecourse to deal with a range of simulated casualties and incidents. We also had our Drone Unit in operation, along with our Communications Unit and Mobile Kitchen.
Exercises like these are essential in strengthening inter-agency cooperation and ensuring we are prepared to respond effectively when called upon.
A sincere thank you to Listowel Fire Service for their professionalism and teamwork, and to Listowel Racecourse for facilitating the exercise and providing an excellent venue.
👏 Well done to all the volunteers who gave their time and effort to make the exercise such a success 🙌

✅ Training Update

🚤🏊‍♂️Congratulations to the 12 Kerry Civil Defence volunteers who completed Personal Survival Techniques and Casualty Handling for Boat Crews training. This was held at the Killorglin Campus of Kerry College. A huge thank you to Kerry College for allowing us the use of their amazing facilities and supporting our volunteers, as well as to Civil Defence Ireland for organising the great course.

🚴‍♀️ We also had members successfully complete the Cycling Responders Course in our Headquarters in Tralee this weekend, further strengthening our emergency response capabilities. Well done to the attendees and to our instructor 🙌
