National Volunteering Week | 18th–24th May

This National Volunteering Week, we’re taking a moment to recognise and thank all of our past and present volunteers with Waterford Treasures.

Volunteers play a valued and much-appreciated role in supporting our work, and we are genuinely grateful for the time, energy, and enthusiasm they bring.

We’d also like to recognise the excellent work of the Waterford Volunteer Centre, who help connect people with meaningful opportunities to get involved and make a difference in their community.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering with us, we’d love to hear from you. You can find out more by contacting the Waterford Volunteer Centre to explore current opportunities: www.volunteerwaterford.ie

Thank you to everyone who continues to support Waterford Treasures in so many ways.

Among all of the buildings that house our museums, Numbers 3, 4, and 5 Cathedral Square are among the most interesting. Built in the mid-1400s, the first record we have of the site concerns it being turned into an Almshouse in 1478, but it had a long history afterwards. These houses were actually lived in up to about 2000 - meaning they might just be one of the oldest urban domestic buildings in the country!

We’re trying to track down some of the families who may have called Cathedral Square home down through the years to learn more about this extraordinary location so if you ever lived in these houses or visited them before they became the Irish Wake Museum please get in touch by emailing [email protected]

Maritime Gallery – Public Open Days

A new permanent Maritime Gallery is being developed by the Port of Waterford and Waterford Treasures to celebrate the city and county’s deep connection with the sea.

The exhibition will tell the story of Waterford’s maritime heritage — including shipbuilding, fishing, migration, river life, and international trade — through artefacts, photographs, documents, and personal stories. It will focus on the people and communities whose lives have been shaped by the port over many generations.

As part of the development, a series of public open days are being held across May. These sessions invite members of the public to share maritime objects, memories, and stories that could help inform and enrich the final exhibition.

Open Day Schedule:
• 9 May – Medieval Museum (Waterford City), 11am–4pm
• 10 May – Fisherman’s Hall, Dunmore East, 2pm–6pm
• 16 May – Coast Guard Cultural Centre, Tramore, 12pm–4pm
• 17 May – Faithlegg National School (Cheekpoint/Passage area), 12pm–2pm
• 23 May – Copper Coast Geopark Visitor Centre, Bunmahon, 12pm–3pm

🎟️ Admission to the Open Days is free. We hope to see you there!

Today, across the country, we’ll begrudgingly reset the oven, the car-and maybe leave one stubborn clock untouched until October. Meanwhile, at the Irish Museum of Time, the team are setting hundreds of timepieces-every dial, every key, every chime.

And this year, more than ever, there’s even more reason to get every second right. Our new exhibition brings together the largest public display of cuckoo clocks in the world—an extraordinary collection from Germany’s Black Forest, where craftsmanship, engineering, and a little bit of magic come together on the hour, every hour.

So while you might let one clock slide at home… here, we don’t have that luxury. Every clock is part of the story. Every chime matters. And when they all strike together—it’s something truly special.

If you haven’t seen it yet, now is the time.

28/03/2026

Waterford City will mark a major cultural milestone with the opening of the world’s largest public exhibition of cuckoo clocks.
