St Brigids Children Centre

St Brigids Children Centre St. Brigid’s Children Centre is a community childcare service located in Powersfield, Hennessy’s Road, Waterford, At St. Brigid’s Family and Community Centre.

Brigid’s Children Centre we provide high quality childcare that is affordable, accessible and inclusive in a child centered environment where children play, have fun and learn under the care of dedicated and professional childcare staff. The Children Centre is an integral part of St. Our business is Community Development and Support. And what better way to support families and encounter community

participation than with the provision of quality affordable and accessible childcare. Our curriculum and programmes reflect the diversity of our children and their families. We provide experience and learning opportunities appropriate to each child’s stage of development and which focus on the holistic development of every child. In the Children Centre children are supported to engage as active agents in their own development and learning, and to explore their environment and participate in problem solving and decision making. Our staff are highly qualified and experienced and appreciate the value of play in a child’s learning process. We value the role of parents and families in the lives of children and we work in partnership with them, and involve parents in all aspects of our service and their child’s education. Some of our parent’s supports include parenting groups, workshops, information provision and one to one work, with the additional services available on the Lower Yellow Road including counselling, play therapy and the Family Resource Centre. We hope to enable our parents to be the best possible parent they can be and maximise their input in their child’s life. Our aim is to provide a ‘one stop shop’ for families by delivering parenting workshops, family support and group activities.

Big shout out today for World Autism Awareness Day. People with Autism just want to be accepted and included for the people they are.

If the Adult Isn’t Clear, the Child Can’t Be

When adults feel unsure, children feel it immediately.

It shows up as:
– wandering
– frustration
– unsettled transitions
– behavior that suddenly feels harder

Often, it isn’t the child.

It’s the structure.

When adults are unclear about:
• where materials belong
• how transitions flow
• what the expectations are
• who is leading

Children sense it.

But when the adult is steady and clear, the room shifts.

There is rhythm.
There is predictability.
There is calm.

Children don’t need perfection.
They need certainty.

The prepared environment is not just about materials.
It’s about adult alignment.

This is why I spend so much time developing and sharing practical systems — language shelves, food work, transitions, organization, adult roles.

You can find many of those systems inside the video library at MontessoriToddlerGuide.com.

Clarity changes everything.

I believe we need to have a very honest conversation about the current state of child development. We are seeing a significant rise in children who are uncoordinated, physically floppy with poor core strength, and struggling to maintain focus. Because these challenges are becoming so frequent, many families and educators have started to believe they are a normal part of modern childhood.

The reality is that these delays are not something a child will simply grow out of without intentional support.

If a child has poor postural stability and a weak core, their brain is dedicating most of its energy just to keeping their body upright. They are not being "lazy" when they give up on a task. They are physically exhausted. Their brain has no bandwidth left for reading or problem solving because it is too busy trying to manage a physical system that lacks an internal anchor.

We are seeing more children with delayed reflexes and poor mind body connection. This keeps the Vagus Nerve in a state of high arousal, meaning these children live in a state of stress. This is why we see more children avoiding challenges or struggling to regulate their emotions. They do not feel safe or grounded in their own bodies.

Coordination and balance are the foundations of brain organisation. A child who cannot physically cross the midline of their body will often struggle to cross the midline of a page when reading and writing. A child who lacks physical impulse control will often lack the emotional brakes needed for social success.

We cannot afford to ignore these delays or wait for them to disappear. We must prioritise movement, real active 3D world play, sensory grounding, and Heavy Work to build the foundations that allow our children to thrive.

It is time to look beyond the behaviour and address the physiological needs of the child.
