Waterford Marine Search and Rescue (WMSR) and Friends of St.John's River. (FOSJR) joined forces on Saturday for Part 2 of our riverbed clean-up.
This time, we focused on the stretch from Hardy’s Bridge to the Pill Bridge and beyond. I was amazed by just how much was removed, including supermarket trolleys, traffic cones, bicycles, scooters and an assortment of other unsightly items.
The clean-up took place at very low tide, with the well-trained WMSR personnel working in the river, undoubtedly the most demanding part of the operation, while members of FOSJR worked along the riverbank.
We would also like to thank the ever-supportive Waterford Council for agreeing to collect and dispose of everything that was removed.
FOSJR is currently drawing up proposals for a long-term plan for the river, which we hope to present to Waterford Council, but more about that at a later date.
A fantastic job by everyone involved. Thank you all!

If you are a regular user or would be user of the St. John's river and would like to see a real change in direction for the betterment of the waterway. Could you please complete the survey below.
This is a great opportunity to revisualise what could be done to fully reintegrate this waterway into Waterford city centre. A canal quarter is possible!

* The survey name doesn't include rivers however inside it clearly mentions riverwalks. ( To name St. John's Pill simply click "Other" and proceed from there.

Friends of Saint John's River would like to extend a huge thank you to Declan Barry and the crew from Waterford Marine Search and Rescue for coming to our rescue today.
They recovered more than 20 traffic cones, two supermarket trolleys, and a variety of other unsightly items from the river between the Courthouse and People's Park.
The operation was carried out professionally, safely, and with military like precision. Their willingness to give their time and expertise makes a real difference to our river and our community.

Excellent video by Timmy Mallett about the vision in Clones to restore their canal and link it up with the major waterways.
Waterford City has its own equivalent in the St. John's river which could also be restored and linked with the main waterways and canal networks.
