Waterford City and County Libraries
·
We were thrilled to open our new Sensory Garden recently in Carrickphierish Library.
Thanks to Waterford Council Metropolitan Mayor Cllr. Jason Murphy for officially opening our new outdoor terrace, an accessible green space that is welcoming and engaging for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy.
Sensory gardens have been shown to generate countless benefits to users with Intellectual Disability, Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Anxiety, and Depression.
They are a form of therapy and can be of benefit to members of our older community by allowing them a space to relax and meditate.

Beach wheelchair trialled in Waterford
A new beach wheelchair prototype has been tested in Waterford.
It comes after calls were made by Blaise Hannigan and Independent TD Matt Shanahan among others, to make beaches accessible for all. The wheelchair was designed to be used without the need for separate trials on beach mats.
"This is far more accessible in that it's a regular sit down chair. The wheels are far thicker, both the back wheels and the front wheels. It's been specially engineered, in that case - it can basically go anywhere on the beach."
"What is hoped is that we can secure funding so that we can have it installed in Tramore, to be used all year round to give access to the beach to wheelchair users. The benefit of having a chair like this is that the person can use it themselves and there's no need for any infrastructure. In some beaches around the country, they put down mats that wheelchairs can roll upon."

One day I'll be an actor Millie tells Sir Ian McKellen
"I'm Millie Anna, born on 31st August 2004 in Windsor, Berkshire. I'm 17 and comfortable with an extra chromosome. One of my goals is to inspire other people with Down Syndrome to follow their dreams, you can do anything you want - sometimes you just need a little extra help to achieve it. I started my Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/outwith_millieanna/) to have fun and show I live a normal life, going out, enjoying the theatre, dinners, holidays just like other 17 year olds. One day I'll be an actor and everyone will see Down Syndrome is really no big deal!
