An important message from Waterford City and County Council

Update – Comeragh Mountains Fire

The hillside fire in the Comeragh Mountains remains active this morning, Friday 31st July. The situation was monitored overnight, and fire crews are again on scene today.

The fire is burning across difficult and, in places, inaccessible terrain, some distance on foot from the nearest access points.

The fire is likely to continue burning over the weekend. There is currently no risk to homes or other buildings.

Weather conditions, including wind direction, are being closely monitored, as they may affect the movement of smoke in the surrounding area.

Members of the public are again asked to avoid the Kilcloone and Coumshingaun area and not to undertake the Coumshingaun Loop Walk while operations continue.

Crews from Waterford City and Kilkenny Fire Service battled for 17+ Hours to fight and contain a substantial wildland fire on Tory Hill in South Kilkenny last night and today.
Smoke and flames could be seen from the City as crews made their way to Tory Hill.
While water and access was a problem, Crews with the help from local farmers gained access to the base of the hill from a field and were safely able to attack and contain the fire.
Remember time helps when reporting a fire, if you see something developing contact the relevant service to get crews in attendance early.

Red Watch had the rare opportunity to practice their skills on a decommissioned HGV during the week.
Using our Holmatro E-Tools they made space in the cab with strategic cuts and then pushing the dash forward to create enough space to extricate the casualty.
Our Rope Rescue skills were then used to extricate the casualty safely and lower to ground level.

Crews recently dealt with a tree down and blocking the road just outside the city.
All our crews have trained Emergency Chainsaw Operators, professionally trained to deal with wind blown trees and trees in dangerous situations. They can make the scene safe and remove the tree if needed.
Waterford City and County Council outdoor staff were also on scene to make the cleanup as fast as possible.
The road was closed for a small amount of time to keep the operational scene safe for our crews.

Before their Drill night last night our Retained Crews took part in a Playful Communities Event in Lismore Park in the City which was organised by Buíon Phort Láirge
The lads had a great time mixing and chatting with the local community by all accounts and we hear they even managed to take part in some of the events…
Any pictures of this folks?
Send them on in the comments..
