The Statue Walk located alongside the castle lake, was added to the garden designs by Hamilton Knox Grogan Morgan and Daniel Robertson. It is a lovely example of the romantic side of Neo-Gothic architecture.

Robertson used the bastions and terraces to add height and variety to what was originally a very flat landscape.

The statues themselves were also an important part of the Gothic style, adding to the romantic character of the gardens.

The Esmonde family were the first family to live here at Johnstown, settling in Ireland following the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1169.

During their time at Johnstown, the Esmondes built two tower houses. One at Rathlannon, which still stands today and can be seen across the castle lake.

The second stood at the front of the castle, pictured here covered in ivy. Sadly, it was deemed unsafe by the State in 1949 and was subsequently demolished.

The Esmondes remained at Johnstown for approximately 500 years, until the arrival of Oliver Cromwell and his army in 1649.

The scullery maid held the lowest position in the domestic hierarchy.

Often just a young girl, she worked long hours in the heat and bustle of the servants’ quarters, washing dishes, scrubbing pots and pans, cleaning floors, carrying water and tending to the fires.

The work was hard and physical, often beginning early in the morning and continuing until late in the evening. Although her work was largely unseen by the family and their guests, it was essential to the daily running of a house such as Johnstown Castle.

For a young girl entering domestic service, the scullery was often where her working life began at just 12 years old.

The Johnstown Castle Summer honey is now available in our gift shop.

The bees in the Johnstown Castle apiary have had a busy summer, supported by the ongoing biodiversity work of our beekeeper and gardening team. Their efforts have produced a delicious 100% pure raw honey, harvested right here on the estate.
