As part of National Volunteer Week, a group of our amazing volunteers enjoyed a fantastic visit to Shankill Castle yesterday.

They were treated to a wonderful tour of the house and beautiful gardens, taking in all the history and charm the place has to offer. The group had a brilliant time and especially loved the delicious food in the café!

A huge thank you to Reuben and the team for the warm welcome and generous hospitality. It made the day be one to remember.

Happy National Volunteer Week!

Behind every tour, every moment, and every story at Johnstown Castle are our incredible volunteers.

From the gardens, museum and archives to retail, events, and beyond, thank you for being the heart of it all.

To celebrate them, we’re heading off on our annual trip to another heritage property. Stay tuned to see our visit in the coming days.

This is a lady’s side saddle, made in London between 1910 and 1920.

Until the 1940s, it was considered proper for women to ride side saddle rather than astride. While elegant, it did make riding a lot more challenging, and certainly more precarious!

You can see this piece on display in the Irish Agricultural Museum at Johnstown Castle.

Have you ever seen a side saddle in person before?
