🧐 Did You Know?
Why It’s Spelled “Coast Guard” (Two Words)
The term “Coast Guard” — two words — isn’t just a style choice, it’s a nod to maritime tradition.
The spelling dates back to the nineteenth century, when structured lifesaving and coastal protection services were first formalised. After the formation of the Irish Free State, the two-word format was retained. Meanwhile, in 1925, His Majesty’s Coastguard (HMCG) in the UK officially changed to the single word: “Coastguard.”
Ireland’s Coast Guard proudly continues to use the original two-word spelling — a small but significant reminder of our independent maritime identity and commitment to safeguarding life along our coasts and inland waterways.
From tradition to tasking — the Irish Coast Guard is about people serving people.
