Curators Notes:
Abstraction, one of the twentieth century’s most influential innovations has become almost intrinsic to contemporary art practice. This exhibition seeks to celebrate the dynamics of abstraction not just by demonstrating a linear timescale of the collection but by dividing it into three thematic components of abstraction: Landscape/Still Life, 2. Anatomies, 3. Pure Abstraction. Work on display ranges from original Cubist paintings by Mary Swanzy to contemporary paintings by John Noel Smith and Paul Doran.
By dividing the collection into three components of abstraction an art historical journey can be formed and discussions around artistic processes come into focus. Showcasing the work of 15 renowned Irish artists working in the mediums of painting, photography and print, Towards Abstraction seeks to position them in the realm of a wider discursive context.
Taking place in the award winning County Council Offices at Carricklawn, Co. Wexford, the exhibition will run for six months. Composed primarily of limestone walls and floors, the interior is designed to echo a streetscape. Towards Abstraction opens up Carricklawn as a new cultural space where similar events are set to take place in the future ~Deirdre Southey
