The top section of a celtic cross I'm working on. The original High Crosses often had a small church on the top, this has been reduced to the roof shape on many now. The sides and wheel are left toolmarked for contrast, with a v-cut IHS and a boss on the reverse.
This piece of granite was recycled from a slab salvaged from Leinster House.

A recent headstone in Wicklow granite. The elements of old Irish script, ogham, notation and the rough tapering shape based on bronze age holed standing stones reflecting a deep interest in Irish culture, history and music.

It was a pleasure to carve this stone with it's subtle wildlife details reflecting a love of nature. A blackbird in an oakwood on the main panel, snowdrops either side of the lowerline and a wee hedgehog on the central pilar.

Limestone (unpainted), Granite (rough surface) and Slate (flakey). Handcarving additional inscriptions on existing stones can be challenging. With changing weather and light conditions. Also usually carving lower down on the stone can entail digging down, to get onself lower. Then matching the font and it's size(s) that maybe you wouldn't have chosen yourself for various reasons. Older weathered stone can be brittle and flakey to carve too. I'm always amazed how ten years weathering changes the texture of certain stones. Very old stones are best left alone and maybe a plaque added in front of it instead, as they are more delicate. They start to become historic monuments if over a hundred years old really and have deserved their retirment!.

Uain Dé /Agnus Dei / Lamb of God. This is the first time I've been asked to carve one of these. The lamb was believed to open the seventh seal at the end of days and was a popular symbol on headstones. It's often in marble and added as an insert. In the second picture is the original very weathered lamb is in the foreground that fell out. My replica in the middle and a piece of carrara marble at the back from which I carved it.
