From foram wrangling to microplastics — the Educational Cruise continues! 🔬

With the foram part wrapped up, we’re moving on to microplastics. This time we had a familiar face joining us from Italy: former MGM Lab member Dr. Akos Kalman, currently working on Pompeiian colorful pigments to identify their geological origin.

Akos beamed into the lab to share his microplastics experience with our students and get them started on the next part of the course.

And for Beverly, a particularly proud full-circle moment:

“It’s hard to describe the pride one feels when your former student beams in to guide your current graduate students in microplastics processing. Building the next generation of scientists, climate heroes, foram wranglers, sea explorers, and coastal guardians brings such joy!!”

From forams to microplastics, with a little Pompeiian geology somewhere in between. Just another morning at MGM Lab. 🌋🔬

🔬 המחקרים שזכו במענקים:
• פרופ' מייקל לזר ופרופ' בברלי גודמן – עדויות קרובות ורחוקות לצונאמי שנגרמו בעקבות התפרצות הר הגעש תרה בתקופת הברונזה.
• פרופ' סמדר בן-טבו דה-לאון – המנגנונים המולקולריים המאפשרים ליצורים ימיים, כמו קיפודי ים, לבנות ולעצב את השלד שלהם.
• פרופ' דן צ'רנוב – השפעת ויסות הנילוס והתחממות האקלים על המגוון הביולוגי והיציבות בים התיכון המזרחי.
• פרופ' ניקולס וולדמן – שחזור תנאי האקלים הקדום במזרח הים התיכון באמצעות משקעים מאגם עתיק.
• פרופ' איציק קליין – פיתוח שיטות בינה מלאכותית לשיפור הדיוק של חיישני ניווט.

A flash flood may disappear within hours, but its chemical signal can remain inside a growing shell.
