At Bar-Ilan University, students studying Arabic don’t just learn the language from textbooks.

Because understanding often begins with simply talking to one another.

Today, June 2, marks 85 years since the Farhoud.

On June 1-2, 1941, a violent pogrom swept through Baghdad. Jewish homes and businesses were looted, families were attacked, and a community that had lived in Iraq for more than 2,500 years suddenly understood that its future was in jeopardy.

Many people don't realize that Baghdad was once one of the most Jewish cities in the world.

The Babylonian Talmud was written in Iraq. For centuries, Jewish life, culture, and scholarship flourished there.

Yet within a few decades, that ancient community was gone.

Today, little remains of Iraq's Jewish heritage. Synagogues have disappeared, cemeteries have fallen into ruin, and historic Jewish sites have been abandoned or repurposed.

The story of Iraq's Jews is one of the Middle East's most overlooked stories, and the Farhoud was one of the moments that changed everything.

How can a story thousands of years old still bring people closer today?

As millions of Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Adha, a holiday of faith, mercy, and sacrifice, we are reminded of a story that continues to connect people across cultures and religions.

In a region too often shaped by fear and division, Dr. Nesya Shemer points to a deeper bond: we are all children of Abraham, peace be upon him.

Our traditions may differ, yet many of the values we cherish are shared: compassion, human dignity, responsibility, and hope.

Eid Mubarak!
May these days bring peace, mercy, and open hearts 🌙

They are romanticized as ‘freedom fighters’, and the world starts forgetting who they really are.
