Chinese Embassy Spokesperson Responds to Media Inquiry Regarding the 79th WHA’s Rejection of the Proposal on Taiwan

Question: On 18 May, the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) decided to reject the so-called proposal of “inviting Taiwan to participate in the WHA as an observer” submitted by certain countries. What is your comment?
Answer: This has been the 10th year in a row that the WHA has rejected the so-called proposal concerning Taiwan. China’s decision of not approving the Taiwan region’s participation in this year’s WHA has wide support and understanding from the international community. The overwhelming majority of countries in the international community have reaffirmed to the Chinese side that they uphold UNGA Resolution 2758, firmly support the one-China principle, and oppose Taiwan’s participation in the WHA. They expressed their support for China’s position through various means, such as writing to the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General. It shows that commitment to the one-China principle is where global opinion trends and the arc of history bends, and what the greater national interests entail.
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have been exploiting the issue of “Taiwan’s participation in the WHA” to engage in political manipulation. Their true purpose is by no means the so-called “promotion of global public health”, but rather to expand so-called “international space” and highlight a so-called “sovereign status”. Not long ago, relevant personnel of the DPP authorities published an article in Israeli media hyping up “Taiwan’s participation in the WHO”, while distorting and challenging UNGA Resolution 2758. The decision of the 79th WHA has dealt them a resounding slap in the face. It fully demonstrates that the international community has long seen clearly the true nature of the DPP authorities, and that separatist acts advocating “Taiwan independence” are against the tide of history and doomed to fail.
Last year, under the instigation of the DPP authorities, certain members of the Knesset jointly signed a so-called statement supporting Taiwan’s participation in international organizations such as the WHO. While reiterating adherence to the one-China policy in the statement, they at the same time blindly supported the participation of a province of China in international organizations that admit only sovereign states. Clearly, they have fallen into the trap of the false narrative fabricated by the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces. We advise these members of the Knesset to open their eyes to the decision of the 79th WHA, to recognize what truly represents the prevailing global trends and the course of history on the Taiwan question, to break free from the information cocoon constructed by “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, and not to stand on the wrong side of history.
The Taiwan question concerns China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, China’s core interests, and the national sentiments of 1.4 billion Chinese people. Any attempt to challenge the one-China principle or create “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan” will never succeed. We hope Israeli friends will remain clear-eyed, not be misled or deceived by “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, resolutely oppose any form of “Taiwan independence”, and firmly support the Chinese government in realizing national reunification.

In his meeting with President Trump, President Xi stressed that the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. Relations.
If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy.
“Taiwan independence” and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. Safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the biggest common denominator between China and the U.S. The U.S. side must exercise extra caution in handling the Taiwan question.
