🇹🇼🏮 Today, Taiwan observes the Ghost Festival (中元節), one of the most distinctive occasions in Taiwanese tradition.
According to tradition, during the seventh month of the lunar calendar, the gates of the spirit world open and spirits return to visit the world of the living. On the 15th day, families, temples, communities and businesses across Taiwan hold ceremonies and prepare offerings of food, fruit and incense. 🕯️🍊
The offerings are intended not only for ancestors, but also for wandering spirits who have no descendants to care for them, respectfully and affectionately referred to in Taiwan as 好兄弟, the “Good Brothers.”
Blending folk beliefs with Taoist and Buddhist traditions, the festival is an expression of respect for the departed, compassion for those who have been forgotten, and a wish for peace, protection and harmony between the worlds of the living and the spirits.
中元節平安 🏮
Wishing everyone peace and blessings this Ghost Festival.
