The J&K Delimitation Commission has proposed to increase six assembly seats for the Jammu division and one for the Kashmir division. For the first time, in Jammu and Kashmir, nine seats are proposed to be allocated for Scheduled Tribes and Seven seats are proposed for Scheduled Castes.
The commission, headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, met all the five Associate Members including Dr Farooq Abdullah, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Mohammad Akbar Lone, Hasnain Masoodi and Jugal Kishore Sharma, in New Delhi today.
Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra and Chief Electoral Officer of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir were also present during the meeting.
The three-member commission was constituted on March 6, 2020, specifically for J&K by virtue of the Parliament Act under the provisions of Part V of J&K Reorganization Act, 2019.
Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra in his remark shared the experiences of the Commission of interacting with people in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir during the Commission's visit.
He emphasized that the work of delimitation is being carried out within the overall statutory framework and keeping the interest of common people of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Associate Members appreciated the fact that this Commission visited the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Commission has shared Paper-I describing proposed seat allocation at district level with all the Members. The Commission has solicited views and suggestions from the members by the end of this month.
