Prof. S N Biswas Publications_Nonprofit Employees' Perceptions of Ethical Workplace Climate
Abstract :
The study investigates the constituents of ethical workplace climate in the nonprofit organization context. Literature suggests that nonprofit organizations' operating principles and propositions are distinct and share unique characteristics in terms of their motives, beliefs, and values. It adopts a qualitative research methodology, employing an inductive-deductive approach to data analysis. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 74 managers from 30 nonprofit organizations, using the critical incident technique, resulting in 121 incidents and 409 reflective statements. Analysis revealed 12 prominent themes and four reference points, identifying four dimensions of ethical workplace climate: enlightened self-interest, collegiality, stewardship, and internal legitimacy. The study contributes to the current ethical climate literature by identifying key factors in nonprofits, as perceived by employees. By shedding light on these factors, it enhances the understanding of ethical climate dynamics within nonprofit organizations. Practical implications emphasize the importance of cultivating enlightened self-interest, promoting collegiality, ethical stewardship, and reinforcing internal legitimacy to enhance the ethical workplace climate.

Prof. Atma Prakash Ojha Publications_Barriers to advice-seeking by entrepreneurs: the influences of shame, desirability and feasibility
Abstract :
Purpose
Entrepreneurs often experience rejection, criticism and failure as part of the entrepreneurial journey – which can cause shame. This study examines the influence of shame on advice-seeking and advice-taking. Since advice is known to influence firm performance and entrepreneurs rely on the advice of mentors, advisors and investors, understanding the role of shame in influencing advice-seeking and advice-taking is essential.
Design/methodology/approach
We used an online experimental design on actual entrepreneurs working in business incubators. We asked all participants to evaluate a business idea and then induced shame and neutral emotion in the treatment and control groups, respectively. After emotion manipulation, we showed the expert advice and gave the choice to participants to revisit their earlier assessment.
Findings
We hypothesized that shame would make the entrepreneur less open to seeking advice but more open to utilizing the advice in decision-making. The results showed that we had no support for the impact of shame on advice-seeking and weak support for the impact of shame on advice-taking.

Prof. H S Shylendra Publications_State versus Peasants : Explaining the 2020/21 Farmers’ Agitation in the Context of the Agrarian Crisis
Abstract
Using a political-economy perspective and through a critical analysis, the article attempts to understand the true nature of the (repealed) farm laws and the agitation besides drawing implications for addressing the extant crisis. The government’s measure appeared desperate given its neo-liberal compulsions, and the proclaimed strategy of resolving the crisis through institutional reforms. As predicted in the theoretical framework, while the disjuncture with social realities undid the farm laws, the attempted broadening of the class orientation aided the farmers’ agitation.

Prof. Pratik Modi Publications_Balancing customer and employee orientations: impact on financial distress and firm value
Abstract
Purpose: This paper investigates the effect of balanced orientation (BO) toward customers and employees on financial distress and firm valuation. Rooted in stakeholder theory and the attention-based theory of firms, the study aims to understand how a balanced synthesis of employee orientation (EO) and customer orientation (CO) influences the long-term market performance and survivability of firms, particularly in the context of emerging markets. Design/methodology/approach: A panel dataset of the top 500 firms listed on the National Stock Exchange of India was analyzed using fixed-effect panel models with robust estimators. The Heckman procedure was employed to address selection bias. Financial data were sourced from the CMIE Prowess database and balanced orientation data were extracted from the annual letters to shareholders. Findings: The study finds that a balanced approach to EO and CO significantly lowers bankruptcy risk and increases firm valuation. Contrary to the traditional dichotomy of EO and CO, BO emerges as a key driver in reducing financial distress and enhancing long-term market performance. Firms embracing multiple strategic orientations outperform those solely focused on customer orientation. Practical implications: For emerging market firms facing resource constraints, developing BO is challenging but crucial. This study suggests adopting a sequential or alternating approach to developing EO and CO, which can alleviate bankruptcy risk and improve market valuation even in competitive environments. Originality/value: This paper contributes to the existing literature by empirically demonstrating the significance of BO in emerging markets. It offers a novel perspective on strategic management, highlighting the importance of balancing customer and employee needs, especially in resource-constrained environments. © 2024, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Prof. Kishan P.K.V. and Prof. Rajverma, Abhinav Publications_Intergenerational education mobility in India: nonlinearity and the Great Gatsby Curve
Abstract :
Introduction: Intergenerational education mobility, which reflects the degree to which an individual’s educational attainment is independent of their parents’ education, is essential for promoting equal opportunities in society. In the context of India, where socio-economic disparities are deeply entrenched, understanding the dynamics of intergenerational mobility is particularly crucial. Methods: This paper examines various aspects of intergenerational education mobility in India using data from the Indian Human Development Survey (IHDS), a nationally representative multi-topic survey. We analyze intergenerational mobility across different age cohorts and investigate the nonlinearities in the transmission of education. Additionally, we explore the impact of educational inequality, economic growth, and public expenditure on education on mobility outcomes. Results: Our analysis reveals a high degree of intergenerational persistence in education, although this persistence has decreased over time. Employing quantile regressions, we observe significant nonlinearities in the relationship between fathers’ and sons’ educational outcomes across the educational distribution. In particular, we find a widening mobility gap between historically advantaged subgroups (urban populations, upper castes, Hindus) and disadvantaged groups (rural populations, lower castes, Muslims) at the middle and upper quantiles. Moreover, we confirm the “Higher Inequality leading to Lesser Mobility” nexus, supporting the ‘Great Gatsby Curve’ within the Indian context. Macroeconomic factors, such as economic growth and public expenditure on education, are positively correlated with educational mobility, suggesting that these factors play a critical role in enhancing mobility. Discussion: These findings highlight the importance of targeted policy interventions to reduce educational disparities and promote greater intergenerational mobility. The widening mobility gaps between socio-economic and demographic groups emphasize the need for more equitable resource distribution and educational reforms. Future research should explore the multifaceted aspects of intergenerational mobility, incorporating longitudinal studies and regional analyses to deepen our understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Prof. Indranil De Publications_Political economy and slum improvement: a study on longitudinal data of Kolkata slums
Abstract :
This study investigates the political economy of slums to understand the role of political competition, electoral power, and political alignment in service delivery. The paper examines whether political competition is likely to improve housing and basic services in slums. It is based on surveys of slum dwellers in 2012 and 2021–22 in Kolkata, India. The results suggest that slum improvement may lead to slum eviction in the future. The political alignment and their electoral power of elected members influence housing and basic services. Ward level high political competition and fragmentation will degrade service in a slum if the incumbent administration and politician fail to showcase their credibility through overall long-term improvement of the service across all the slums. Housing and some services were found to better in slums facing high political competition and fragmentation. For an inclusive slum improvement, government should plan with the community and engage the market rather than depend on market-led or unplanned government initiatives.

Library Overview

Libraries are vital to strengthening and expanding an institute and its activities. IRMA's Ravi J Matthai Library was named after Prof. Ravi J Matthai, one of the founder members of the Institute and was formally inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, on March 22, 1986. The Ravi J. Mathai Library at IRMA is the country's most comprehensive and resourceful library in the area of rural management. India's rural sector has been subjected to inordinate changes, especially over the past two decades warranting changes in policy framework, institutional framework, and the eco-socio-political dynamics of rural society. The challenges posed by the underlying dynamics are both plentiful and daunting presenting limitless opportunities for exploration and learning. The Ravi J Matthai Library supports the teaching and research programmes of the institute. It has built up a need-based collection to meet the information needs of the faculty and participants of various programmes of the institute. The collection includes books, journals, back volumes, project reports, microfilms, microfiche, videocassettes, maps, compact discs and state, national and international documents. It has developed an information retrieval and dissemination system for effective and efficient utilisation of the available resources. The library services happen to be fully automated through Koha software enabling searching, reporting, circulation and innumerable other functions. Linked to a campus-wide computer network the library provides easy access to faculty, students, and researchers through the intranet powered by Koha Web-OPAC. Services provided by the library include reference, library orientation, inter-library-loan, Internet access and photocopying. The library has also been subscribing to E-journals and Databases i.e. ABI-Inform (Management), EBSCO (Management, Environment, IT, Social sciences), JSTOR (Social Sciences Archives), CMIE databases (Prowess, Commodities, Economic Outlook & States of India) and Indiastat.com, a database of Socio-Economic statistical information, EPW & EPWRF, Sage e-journals etc. The library also subscribes to DELNET services which is a helpful resource for teaching and research.
