During the Session on 'Global Biogas Outlook: India, Italy, Ukraine' at the World Biogas Expo & Summit 2026 in Birmingham, UK, Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman, NDDB presented India's dairy-led circular economy model. He highlighted the immense potential of the country's dairy cooperative network to scale biogas, compressed biogas (CBG) and organic fertiliser production, creating new income opportunities for farmers while strengthening energy security and contributing to global climate action.

The presentation showcased India's unique strengths as the world's largest milk producer with over 80 million rural dairy households, 302 million bovines and an estimated 1,653 million tonnes of cattle dung generated annually. Backed by a cooperative network of 22 state federations, 241 district milk unions over 2.3 lakh village dairy cooperative societies and 17 million dairy farmers, the sector provides a strong foundation for scaling sustainable biogas initiatives. Dr. Shah emphasised that dairy cooperatives ensure market access, equitable value distribution and sustainable rural development.

He outlined NDDB's scalable manure management models ranging from household biogas plants providing clean cooking fuel, organic slurry and carbon credit benefits to centralised biogas and CBG plants that generate clean energy, organic fertilisers and additional income for farmers through dung procurement. Community biogas systems were also highlighted as an effective solution for promoting clean energy and organic farming at the village level.

Dr. Shah also highlighted the India–Japan CBG Initiative, which aims to establish 1,000 CBG and organic fertiliser plants through the country's cooperative ecosystem. He further outlined NDDB's strategic partnerships with Suzuki Motor Corporation through NDDB MRIDA Ltd, Sustain Plus Energy Foundation and the Multi-State Manure Cooperative to accelerate biogas adoption and strengthen the manure value chain across India.

Concluding his address, Dr. Shah reiterated that manure is a valuable resource, not waste and reaffirmed NDDB's commitment to advancing the circular bioeconomy through global partnerships. He noted that Indian dairy cooperative model offers a scalable pathway for renewable energy, climate resilience, farmer prosperity and inclusive rural development.
