CPI(M) organised a spirited dharna at the NTR District Collectorate in Andhra Pradesh, demanding the immediate resolution of housing-related issues, including the provision of houses and house sites, title deeds, registration of titles, and the distribution of APTIDCO and JNNURM houses. Following the dharna, a delegation submitted collective petitions to Joint Collector S Ilakkiya, IAS, listing the grievances of eligible beneficiaries. Over 6,700 houses built for them remain vacant without being handed over, while TIDCO is delaying the process despite having collected deposits.

State Secretariat member CH Babu Rao and State Committee member Donepudi Kasinath addressed the protest and strongly criticised the TDP-led NDA government and the district administration for betraying the poor by failing to fulfil assurances made to them over the past two and a half years. The protesters gave the district administration an ultimatum to resolve the issues before September 15, failing which they would occupy the vacant government houses themselves.

Strong reactions have emerged across Kerala against Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar’s remarks that women entering public life would lead to “great destruction.”

Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said he cannot agree with Kanthapuram’s statement, calling it unacceptable in a progressive society. CPI(M) leaders had also expressed similar views earlier.

“Women are not meant to remain confined to their homes. They must participate actively in all spheres of public life,” Satheesan said.

He added that Islamic history itself reflects women’s participation in society and said Kanthapuram’s position amounts to a misinterpretation of Islam.

Several social and cultural organisations have also come out against Kanthapuram’s remarks. However, the ruling Indian Union Muslim League has so far chosen not to respond to the controversy.
