*Aadhaar corrections get tighter: Gazette notification required for name changes*
The UIDAI has introduced stricter rules for Aadhaar corrections, requiring a gazette notification for even small name changes. The new guidelines aim to prevent fraud and ensure accuracy in the national identification system.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced stricter guidelines for updating Aadhaar details as well as new enrolments, including corrections to names, addresses, and dates of birth. These new rules are aimed at reducing fraud and ensuring the accuracy of Aadhaar records.
*Mandatory gazette notification for name corrections*
Under the updated rules, even minor corrections to names on the Aadhaar card will now require a gazette notification. This applies to changes in both the full name and individual letters in the name. Along with the gazette notification, applicants must also submit an identity document with the old name. Accepted documents include PAN cards, voter IDs, driving licences, service identity cards, new SSLC books with photos, and passports.
*Aadhaar holders are allowed only two attempts to correct their names.*
For those wishing to correct their Aadhaar address as well as new enrolments, the process has been simplified. A public sector bank passbook with a photo can now be used as proof of address. To use the passbook, applicants must obtain a certificate from the branch manager, confirming that the address is registered in the bank's records and that the e-KYC process is complete.
*Date of birth correction guidelines tightened*
Corrections to the date of birth will continue to be allowed only once, but the rules have become more stringent. For individuals under 18, only a birth certificate issued by authorised state authorities will be accepted as proof of date of birth. Documents like passports and SSLC books are no longer valid for this purpose.
For adults over 18, an SSLC book can still be used to correct the date of birth. However, applicants must provide the SSLC book's cover page, the page with the address, and the mark sheet with the seal and signature of the board secretary. The name on the SSLC book must also match the one in the Aadhaar record exactly.
