On July 6, 2024, a significant consultation on child rights and protection was held with over 300 children at the joint shelter of the Department of School Education and Literacy and Unique Charitable Trust, Kottoor. This important event covered a wide range of topics, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child, children's rights, the harmful effects of child marriage and child labour, social security schemes, and the formation of child rights associations and action movements with children.

The consultation was made successful with the active participation of BEO Padmanabhanagar of Kudligi Taluk, Head Teacher Basavaraj, President of Unique Charitable Trust Ishwarayya, fellow teachers, and media representatives. Their collective efforts and insights contributed to a fruitful and informative session for all attendees.

By fostering such discussions, we continue to work towards a future where every child's rights are protected and upheld.

At Grama Panchayat Huyilagola Higher Primary School in Gadag Taluk and District, significant strides are being made towards gender equality and encouraging drop-out girls to return to school. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Ms. Ashwini, a dedicated field facilitator from Gadag, many girls are now resuming their education.

Through the Children in Governance project, Ms. Ashwini has been actively engaging with the community to raise awareness about the importance of education for all children, regardless of gender. Her work includes counseling families, addressing barriers to education, and creating a supportive environment for girls to thrive in their studies.

This initiative is not just about education; it's about empowering young girls and ensuring they have equal opportunities to succeed. The positive impact of Ms. Ashwini's efforts is visible in the increasing number of girls returning to school, ready to learn and achieve their dreams.

On July 13th, the children of Government Senior Primary School Mukuwe received valuable information about the POCSO Act. The session began with a discussion on various child-related issues, focusing primarily on the International Convention on the Rights of the Child. Following this, the children learned about different laws designed to protect their rights, leading up to an in-depth explanation of the POCSO Act.

The information was presented through real-life cases to help the children understand the importance and application of the act. They were taught who to contact in such situations, how to use the 1098 helpline number, and the procedures for reporting incidents. The role of the police and their supportive interactions with children during such cases were also highlighted. Additionally, the children were introduced to the Child Welfare Committee, which is dedicated to safeguarding children's rights.

An essential observation from the session was the need for a child-friendly training manual. Such a manual should include relatable cases, quizzes, and scenarios presented in a way that is easy for young minds to grasp. This approach ensures that children can better understand and retain the information shared with them.

Sharing this knowledge empowers children and contributes to a safer environment where their rights are protected and upheld.

Exposure Visit by Ankur Trust and Matru Schaya Social Welfare Society to Ballari

Ankur Trust and Matru Schaya Social Welfare Society from Maharashtra visited Ballari to understand the local governance system and the support provided by the Karnataka Government and Rural Development Panchayat Raj. The team met with elected members, PDO, teachers, community members, parents, and children. They visited the library and school, interacted with the Child Rights Club, Anganwadi workers, ASHA, and government officials including the Tahsildar, Taluk Panchayat manager, and Child Development Project Officer. The team also visited the Nutrition Rehabilitation Center and Community Health Center, reviewed Child Rights Grama Sabha minutes, and spoke with teachers and PDOs. Additionally, they met with child reporters, viewed drawings by Child Rights Club members, and learned about the roles and responsibilities of village rehabilitation workers.

Information Workshop on POCSO Act at KPS Junior College
Today, KPS Junior College under Keyyuru Gram Panchayat conducted an information workshop on the POCSO Act for first-year and second-year PUC students, with over 250 students participating. The workshop covered various child-related laws, including the definitions and differences between types of sexual harassment, assault, and r**e as outlined in the POCSO Act. Important violations such as po*******hy and the exploitation of children's bodies were discussed.

Students were informed about the responsibilities of the Child Welfare Committee in protecting children and the steps the committee should take. The proper procedure for police to receive complaints from children and the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of a child's identity were emphasized.

The workshop also addressed how children can protect themselves from sexual violence, whom to approach for help, and the physical, psychological, and emotional changes during adolescence. The risks of excessive mobile phone use, exposure to inappropriate content, and the dangers of social media interactions were highlighted.

Additionally, the alarming rise of substance abuse among children, including ma*****na and MDM tablets, was discussed. Students were urged to stay away from such substances and to embrace the value of respect in life. The workshop concluded with a call for youth to become responsible citizens and create community awareness to prevent such cases.

Quarterly Review Meeting with Children In Governance Team Members
We recently held our quarterly review meeting with the Children In Governance team members from the four districts we operate in: Ballari, Dakshina Kannada, Gadag, and Chikkaballapura. During this meeting, we discussed the past three months' work, reviewed the minutes of all programs and activities conducted by the team, and analyzed children's secondary data. We also planned for the next three months, with each member sharing their achievements and reports from the previous quarter. Exciting developments and initiatives are on the horizon as we continue our mission to empower children through governance.

Workshop on POCSO Act at Vivekananda Polytechnic College, Nehru Nagar
Today, an informative workshop was held at Vivekananda Polytechnic College, Nehru Nagar, focusing on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The event saw the enthusiastic participation of about 100 students. The session began with an overview of child rights, including the World Organization Convention on Child Rights, and an introduction to various child-related laws preceding the POCSO Act.

The workshop covered the distinctions between different types of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and r**e as defined under the POCSO Act. Participants learned about the Act's most significant violations, such as po*******hy and the exploitation of children's bodies or body parts. The responsibilities of the Child Welfare Committee in ensuring children's protection and nurturing, and the procedures police should follow when receiving complaints from children, were also discussed. The importance of maintaining the confidentiality of a child's identity was emphasized.

The session concluded with a strong message on the importance of respect, responsible mobile usage, and the role of youth in fostering community awareness and becoming responsible citizens. It was a powerful reminder of the collective effort needed to ensure the safety and well-being of children in our community.
