In Bengaluru, just as in many other Indian cities, less than 30% of garbage is collected through Door to Door collection. People dump their garbage in street corners, vacant sites, near transformers, inside drains and into lakes at their convenience. The result is over 12,000 litter spots across Bengaluru. Littering forces manual handling of garbage, affects the health of citizens, harms animals t
hat feed from these spots, disturbs the aesthetics of the city and affects disposal of garbage. The solution does not lie in merely doing clean-up drives, but in improving door to door collection, by working with the BBMP and changing behavioral aspects of citizens. It is time we focus on making Bengaluru a litter-free city. The primary intention of the project is to work with the system in solving the problem of littering. This is not a platform to complain or point fingers at the BBMP, instead the focus is on gathering relevant information for meaningful action.
