The National Gallery of Modern Art, Bengaluru was established in 2009 at the premises of the Manikyavelu Mansion at 49 Palace Road, Bangalore. Spread over an area of 3.5 acres, the gracious heritage building was transformed from a residence into a museum gallery, with a display space of 1551 square meters. This has been supplemented by a new Gallery Block, which adds a display space of 1260 sq.
The new architecture has been designed in harmony with the style and ambiance of the hundred year old Manikeyavelu Mansion while at the same time fulfilling the requirements of a modern museum. The new architecture is so designed, that while fulfilling the requirement of spaces needed by a modern museum, it coexists in harmony with the style and ambiance of the traditional mansion.The Gallery stands as a repository of the cultural ethos of the country and showcases Indian art starting from the early 18th century till the present times. NGMA Bengaluru is situated in a beautiful space with marvelous old trees, a fountain and a mirror pool. In addition, there are parking facilities for more than 50 cars at a time. Equipped with a refurbished auditorium, a public art reference library, a good cafeteria, and a museum shop cm facilitations block, the NGMA Bengaluru looks ahead to becoming a hub of art activities and a major cultural centre at Bengaluru. The Gallery organizes and hosts talks on art and culture by eminent speakers, seminars, film screenings as well as workshops and guided gallery walks throughout the year. All auditorium events organized by NGMA and the art reference library are open to all and remain free of charge.
