๐ŸฆA healthy dose of science, a sugar rush of ice-creams and monsoon showers on the side!

Last Friday, C-CAMP hosted another exciting edition of Sugar Rush with Science, bringing together curious minds over ice cream and conversations that explored frontiers of science and innovation.

The evening featured two engaging chalk-talks by:
* Dr. Dhananjaya Dendukuri, Founder, Achira Labs Pvt. Ltd., and
* Prof. Minhaj Sirajuddin, Faculty, Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (BRIC-inStem)

Dr. Dhananjaya spoke about the role of Cystatin C* in detecting diabetic retinopathy. With over 100 million+ people living with diabetes in India โ€” he highlighted how Achira's pocket-sized, microfluidics-based Lateral Flow Assay (LFA) can detect Cystatin C using just 2 microlitres of blood. Designed for rapid and accessible screening, especially for mass screenings in rural settings, the technology has the potential to transform early detection and management of diabetic retinopathy across India.

Prof. Minhaj Sirajuddin explained how muscle progenitor cells help assemble the sarcomere (the functional unit of muscle tissue) โ€” the important role of cellular scaffolding during this muscle building process, and what happens when the scaffolding doesn't dismantle on-time on its own. This failure to dismantle leads to diseases like cardiomyopathy, muscular dystrophy including genetic diseases like Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and chemotherapy-induced muscle loss/ cachexia.

CCAMP supported Zumutor Biologics, an immuno-oncology startup has raised $7.3 million (~โ‚น70 crore) in Series B funding towards its ongoing Phase 1 clinical trials by FDA as a standalone as well as combination therapy.

Zumutor's ZM008 is a first-in-class Natural Killer (NK) cell checkpoint therapy for solid tumors. The molecule is a monoclonal antibody engineered by proprietary Zumutor platforms. It mediates NK cell activation and subsequent T cell activation to modify tumor microenvironment driving eventual immune cell attacks on tumor.

The round was backed by existing investors Accel and Bharat Innovation Fund, along with new investors like Premji Invest and angel investors such as Ashish Kacholia - Lucky Investment Managers and Raj Dandu.

The startup plans to launch Phase 1B multi-geography cohorts and global Phase 2 trials, which will also include sites in India.
