Building Collaborative Systems for Rural Prosperity in Chhattisgarh

Sustainable rural development isn’t achieved in isolation—it thrives when institutions, communities, and partners unite around a shared vision.

The inauguration of the Model Village project supported by Altius & implemented by Vrutti in Chhattisgarh marks a significant milestone in this collective journey. Bringing together Altius, NABARD, Vrutti, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), and key government departments across Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, and Livestock, this initiative embodies a true whole-of-society approach to rural development.

By combining technical expertise, institutional backing, and community-led action, we are strengthening local livelihood ecosystems. Our goal goes beyond individual interventions:

🛠️ Strengthen local institutions to lead long-term change
📈 Build resilient livelihoods through integrated value chains
🌱 Foster sustainable rural economies built to last

The journey ahead is about creating systems that enable communities to drive and sustain their own prosperity. Together, we can build stronger systems for more resilient rural communities.

👉 Follow our journey as we work with partners and communities to build more resilient rural economies.

Meet Ashwini, the force behind Prakruti and Co.! ✨

Starting with just ₹600 and a passion for natural, sustainable personal care, Ashwini built her Bengaluru-based enterprise through persistent self-learning.

Realising that long-term growth requires stronger systems, Ashwini partnered with Vrutti to take her business to the next level. By strengthening her financial tracking, registering for GST, and stepping onto ONDC, she unlocked incredible growth:

Annual turnover grew to ₹15–18 lakh!
3 women now have full-time, secure jobs with digital payroll.
25–30 women resellers are earning income with zero upfront costs and no financial risk.

Ashwini’s story is a beautiful reminder that when entrepreneurial drive is supported by the right collaborative ecosystem, women-led businesses can become powerful engines of community well-being and dignity.

Let’s celebrate her agency, resilience, and impact! ✨

From home kitchens to cloud kitchens — Koli women are turning tradition into enterprise. 🐟

Featured in The Times of India, the story of Producer Company Limited (DPCL) captures how Mumbai’s Koli women are transforming their culinary skills into growing enterprises.

Promoted by Vrutti -Livelihood Impact Partners and Daryavardi Mahila Sangh (DMS), DPCL is creating a collective platform for women fish vendors and food entrepreneurs to move beyond individual livelihoods and access new markets.

Over the past two years, Koli home chefs have taken their cuisine to Women Who Build, the Wai Koli Food Festival, Samudra Swad, seafood festivals and community events. These experiences showed strong demand for authentic Koli food — while also revealing the need for stronger branding, digital visibility and business capabilities.

That is where Vrutti’s intervention comes in.

We are supporting women to strengthen their capabilities in business management, product development, food safety, costing, pricing, market linkages and enterprise management.

The results are already visible — from catering for 150 guests in Wai to adapting menus to local preferences and securing an order for 800 fish cutlets.

What began in home kitchens is now finding its way into larger markets and permanent cloud kitchens.

This is more than preserving Koli cuisine.

It is about turning traditional knowledge into enterprise, strengthening women-led businesses and creating sustainable livelihoods.

Corporate gifting is a procurement decision. Why not use it strengthen your ESG commitments?

At Vrutti, we work to build livelihood ecosystems that are more inclusive, resilient, and market-led. One of the most powerful ways to do that is by creating stronger market access for social enterprises and integrating them into mainstream supply chains.

Together with Sattva, and supported by SAP CSR, we're introducing the Impact Enterprise Gifting Brochure—a curated collection of high-quality products from verified social enterprises across India.

Access to finance is important—but is it the first barrier women-owned nano enterprises face?

Millions of women entrepreneurs already have customers, generate income, and run viable businesses. Yet many remain invisible to formal finance because they lack the systems that make them lender-ready.

In her latest article, Arya Raj argues that India needs to invest not only in expanding credit, but also in building readiness infrastructure—from financial visibility and credit literacy to documentation support and stage-based enterprise development.

As we reflect on International MSME Day, it's time to shift the conversation from access to credit to readiness for growth.

Reviving Vettankulam Tank: Where Water Meets Livelihoods

In Vettanviduthi village, Pudukkottai district, the restoration of the Vettankulam tank has transformed a fading water body into a lifeline for more than 80 farming families.

Once operating at only 30–40% of its capacity, the tank now stores nearly 29 lakh litres of water and provides reliable irrigation to 100 acres of farmland—up from less than 20 acres before the intervention.

Years of silt accumulation had reduced water storage, groundwater recharge had weakened, and only 4 of the village's 18 wells remained functional. Farmers were limited to one crop a year, incomes declined, and seasonal migration became common.

With support from Vrutti and Standard Chartered Bank, the community restored the tank by desilting 3,500 cubic metres, strengthening 470 metres of the bund, and repairing water channels. To ensure long-term sustainability, the Village Water Management Committee also contributed ₹61,500 to establish a Climate Resilience Fund for future maintenance.

The results have been remarkable. Paddy yields have increased by over 40%, groundwater levels have risen by 3–4 feet, and 14 of the 18 wells are now functional. Farmers are growing two crop cycles annually, diversifying into horticulture, and supporting nearly 200 livestock with reliable water access.

Household incomes have increased by an estimated 35–45%, generating an additional ₹18–22 lakh in annual crop revenue across the village. Most importantly, distress migration has reduced significantly as more families are able to build sustainable livelihoods at home.

The revival of Vettankulam is more than a water conservation success story. It demonstrates how community ownership, climate-resilient infrastructure, and strong partnerships can restore ecosystems, strengthen rural livelihoods, and create lasting resilience.

From managing a small beauty parlour to securing a business loan and planning for growth, Divya’s business evolved to generate increased income and build financial independence. When businesses receive the right support, their impact can help change social and economic behaviours.

When Divya first joined the Retailer Strengthening Project under SAFAL, an initiative by Hindustan Limited, implemented by , she was not aware of how to manage finances, navigate digital payments, and understand credit. With clear training that supports improving business acumen through financial and customer management, she now maintains daily financial records, transacts confidently through UPI applications, and is able to retain her clients with better customer engagement and products.

With increased confidence from regular sessions and learnings, she decided to invest ₹50,000 strategically to upgrade equipment and premium products for her parlour with a loan. By maintaining clear financial records and good credit practices, she hopes to expand her enterprise and provide new offerings like sarees, bangles, and cosmetic products that can increase her monthly income to nearly ₹70,000 and establish her as a financially independent and successful businesswoman.
