Halli in Kannada means village. A fighter aircraft named Marut had an accident in this area, hence the area is called Marathahalli. The Outer Ring Road of Bangalore passes through Marathahalli. Marut in Hindi/ Sanskrit refers to the god of wind/air in Hindu mythology. Until the late 1990s the area was a sleepy village in the outskirts of Bangalore. Following the IT boom, its close proximity to HAL

Airport, Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and Electronic City and the presence of the Outer Ring Road, this area has boomed into a self-sufficient township. There are a large number of cloth stores, shopping malls, supermarkets and other shops in this area which retail products at a cheaper rate compared to the rest of the city. A large number of flats and IT companies have also come up in the area. The first multiplex in Bangalore, Innovative Multiplex is located here..

Bengaluru is situated at approximately 3000 feet above mean sea level. When it rains unless the water is retained the rain water will flow down to lower levels. When Three generations of Kempegowdas built layered lakes they kept this aspect in mind, hence they interconnected the lakes through an excellent network of canals called Rajkaluves so that when the lakes in higher elevations filled out then the water flowed to the lakes in lower elevation.

To understand Bengaluru’s water management system, it is important to understand the city’s topography. Bengaluru has three major natural valley/drainage zones, and three minor ones. The major valleys are Vrishabhavathi Valley, Koramangala-Challaghatta Valley and Hebbal Valley. The minor valleys are Tavarekere, Kathriguppe and Arkavathi.

When these valleys are blocked by mindless town planning or lack of it.. and aided by highly corrupt combination of political, bureaucratic lobby and greedy real estate thugs then where does water go ?
