ICAR-National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management

ICAR-National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management The institute aims at exploring the avenues for management of abiotic stresses affecting the very sustainability of national food production systems.

NIASM, an unique institute of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), was established in 2009 at Malegaon Khurd, Baramati. It specifically addresses the aberration induced stresses due to atmospheric, water and edaphic factors, which are estimated to cause 50 per cent losses in crop productivity. Since these stresses are predicted to amplify due to climate change and land degradation, the

primary task for the institute is to evolve alleviation techniques through advances in frontier science research. The institute is being structured to enhance capacity of scientists and policy makers mainly by imparting knowledge and by providing the state-of-art facilities for multidisciplinary and multi-commodity research.

A successful Monitoring Visit cm Project Implementation Monitoring Committee (PIMC) of the NABARD-supported Climate Resilient CHARA BANK Project was conducted at ICAR–NIASM, Baramati, by 𝐒𝐡𝐫𝐢 𝐑𝐚𝐯𝐢 𝐊𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐋𝐨𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢 (𝐀𝐆𝐌, 𝐅𝐒𝐃𝐃, 𝐍𝐀𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐃) and 𝐒𝐡𝐫𝐢 𝐃𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐡 (𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫, 𝐅𝐒𝐃𝐃, 𝐍𝐀𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐃). Mr. 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐉𝐚𝐝𝐡𝐚𝐯, KVK expert, also participated in the review.

The team carried out extensive field monitoring by visiting Multitier CHARA BANK, Silvipasture, Boundary Fodder Plantation, Fodder Demonstration Plots, and newly established CHARA BANK models across Jalgaon Supe and Karha Waghaj. NABARD officials interacted directly with beneficiary farmers, reviewed field performance, and assessed the impact of the interventions. Farmers shared their experiences of year-round fodder availability, reduced feed costs, improved livestock health, and enhanced resilience during fodder-scarce periods.

During the PIMC meeting, Dr. Sangram Chavan, Principal Investigator, presented the project's scientific achievements, including climate-resilient fodder system development, biomass estimation, livestock feeding trials, and technology dissemination. The meeting was chaired by 𝐃𝐫. 𝐊. 𝐒. 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐝𝐲, Director, ICAR–NIASM, who appreciated the progress of the project and remarked that the scientific interventions had translated into visible and measurable impacts on farmers' fields, demonstrating the effectiveness of the CHARA BANK approach in addressing fodder scarcity and improving livestock-based livelihoods.

Mr. Ratan Jadhav highly appreciated the CHARA BANK models and recommended their replication in KVK-adopted villages to accelerate technology dissemination. The NABARD team commended the project's scientific approach, field implementation, and measurable outcomes, and recommended scaling up the CHARA BANK concept as a bankable model through convergence with financial institutions for wider adoption across drought-prone regions.
The sincerely efforts of —Dr. A. S. Morade, Dr. V. D. Kakade, Mr. Vikram Gawade, Mr. Praneth, and the entire project team—for their dedicated efforts and commitment throughout the project.
