Channa stewartii was successfully bred and larval rearing achieved under captive conditions by Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute , marking India’s first breakthrough in breeding and seed production; the species showed natural spawning with 73% hatching success, producing larvae (~8.4 mm) from spherical, buoyant eggs (~820 µm diameter). The species exhibited absolute fecundity of 1,578–2,769 eggs per fish and relative fecundity of 217–346 eggs g⁻¹ body weight; brooders (female 26.3–32.8 cm, 15.6–30.5g; male 25.5–29.8 cm, 13.4–20.9g) were successfully matured under captive conditions, indicating strong potential for seed production and conservation-oriented aquaculture.
