Empowering SC Farmers & Boosting Rural Livelihoods! 🐟🌾

ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore in collaboration with Dhaanyaganga Krishi Vigyan Kendra (DGKVK), successfully organized a two-day training and fisheries input distribution programme in the Hatpara area, Khargram block on September 1st and 2nd, 2026.

Part of the "Cluster-Based Bata Fish (Labeo bata) Culture Programme," this initiative directly benefited 50 Scheduled Caste (SC) farmers from 12 panchayats across the Murshidabad region.
The event was inaugurated by the Hon’ble MLA of Khargram AC, Mrs. Malati Mal, who encouraged farmers to embrace scientific fisheries to transform their socio-economic status and assured continued government convergence for the upliftment of local fisherfolks.

📈 Key Highlights of the Initiative:

Input Distribution: To ensure immediate field-level success, each of the 50 participating farmers received 15 kg of advanced Bata fish fingerlings, 35 kg of floating fish feed, and 500 g of probiotics.

Expert Guidance: Capacity-building sessions were led by Dr. Pranaya Kumar Parida (Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI), Mr. Arkajit Karan (Fishery Extension Officer), and Mr. Uday Narayan Das (Fisheries Specialist, DGKVK).

Scientific Training: Farmers gained intensive knowledge on modern freshwater aquaculture, feed management, disease prevention, and commercial viability.This collaborative effort marks a major milestone in connecting advanced fisheries science with grassroots rural entrepreneurship!

🤝 ICAR-CIFRI & Coal India Limited Join Hands for Sustainable Fisheries and Livelihoods
A significant step towards sustainable development, innovative mine repurposing and community livelihood generation!
The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore, and Coal India Limited (CIL) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 3 September 2026 to promote collaboration in pisciculture, fisheries research, capacity building and extension activities.
🐟 What will this partnership focus on?
The collaboration will explore scientific pisciculture through caged fish farming in suitable, water-filled abandoned mine voids, transforming underutilised water resources into productive fisheries assets.
🌱 Key areas of collaboration include:
🔹 Sustainable pisciculture and caged fish farming
🔹 Livelihood opportunities for local communities and Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
🔹 Enhanced regional fish production and nutritional security
