World Milk Day | June 1

Milk is more than a source of nutrition-it is a foundation of food security, rural livelihoods, and agricultural prosperity. The dairy sector supports millions of farming families and contributes significantly to economic development worldwide.
This year’s theme, "Celebrating Women Farmers," shines a spotlight on the invaluable role women play across the dairy value chain. From animal husbandry and milk production to processing and marketing, their dedication and resilience drive the growth and sustainability of the dairy sector.
At ICAR-NIVEDI, we recognize that healthy livestock are fundamental to a productive and sustainable dairy ecosystem. Through research, disease surveillance, diagnostics, and innovation, we remain committed to strengthening livestock health and supporting the farming community.

On this World Milk Day, let us celebrate the farmers, especially women farmers, whose efforts nourish lives, strengthen rural economies, and contribute to a sustainable future.

Dr M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE & Director General, ICAR, presented on the “Agricultural Roadmap Towards Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat 2047” during the Rashtriya Krishi Sammelan – Kharif Abhiyan 2026 on 29 May 2026.

In his presentation, Dr. Jat emphasized that achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047 will require a transformative approach to agriculture, driven by higher productivity, crop diversification, sustainable resource management and climate resilience. He highlighted the need to move beyond the business-as-usual approach and adopt science-led, region-specific agricultural planning to meet future food, nutrition and economic demands.

The roadmap focuses on optimizing land use, improving soil health, enhancing water and nutrient use efficiency, and achieving self-reliance in pulses and oilseeds. It also envisages increasing agricultural production from the current 1.5 billion tonnes to 3 billion tonnes by 2047 through innovation, technology adoption and farmer-centric interventions.

Dr. Jat also highlighted the progress made under the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, including the preparation of crop-specific action plans, district-level scientific agricultural roadmaps, climate adaptation strategies and state-wise agricultural development frameworks. These initiatives are aimed at enabling states to formulate evidence-based strategies aligned with local agro-ecological conditions and national development goals.

Reaffirming the commitment of ICAR and the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, he called for a collaborative “Team Agriculture” approach involving states, agricultural universities, research institutions and farmers to build a productive, sustainable and self-reliant agricultural sector for Viksit Bharat 2047.
