Avifauna Bhandara

Avifauna Bhandara Promoting bird-watching, documentation and conservation ! Bhandara is a district lying in the easternmost region of Maharashtra.

Blessed with lush green flora, it is fondly known as the ' District of lakes ', and is also rich in fauna. Consciously Bird-watching since about 4 years now, collectively we have covered more than 25 minor and major birding spots; around 5 Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks, 250+ birds species and many more fauna and flora species, we still believe we are amateurs in this filed. This page is

an attempt to create an information database of bird species along with other life species found around them in order to create awareness about the status of Avifauna in the region.

Sarus Crane | Grus antigone
The world's tallest flying bird Sarus stands typically 115-167cm and wingspan of about 250 cm, though male Sarus can attain a maximum height of 180cm.

Sarus is protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
Sarus were distributed only in Gondia, Bhandara and Chandrapur district in Maharshtra. Though their population has been revived in Gondia district from 5 in 2004 to 35 currently, they have not been sighted in Bhandara since a long time.

The Sarus pair for life, and are considered symbol of marital fidelity. When a bird in the pair dies, the surviving one keeps trumpeting for many days and starves itself to death.

P.S. Photograph taken in Gondia district.

The unfortunate incidents of poaching of waterfowls are rampant around the waterbodies of Bhandara district.

These photos depict the incident that was caught in the act at Pachgaon lake, near Warathi, Bhandara. The villagers of Pachgaon and Ner, who own the farmlands adjacent to the Pachgaon lake are involved. They consider waterfowls as a free substitute of the chicken and poach them for meat.

Kudos to the villagers and the forest department of Bhandara district !

Kudos to the villagers and the forest department of Bhandara district !

Bhandara village sets an example for peaceful man-animal coexistence - The joint initiative started by the forest department and villagers, which began in Diwali last November, ended on January 2, after the bear finally left the house with both cubs clinging to her back.
