🌍 World Environment Day 2026 at ICMR-NIREH, Bhopal 🌿
ICMR–National Institute for Research in Environmental Health (ICMR-NIREH), Bhopal, celebrated World Environment Day on 5 June 2026 with the active participation of scientists, staff members, students, and researchers.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Ramachandra Kamath, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine, Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences, Madikeri, Karnataka, delivered an insightful lecture on “Public Health Challenges in Disaster Situations.”
Drawing upon his extensive experience in disaster response across India and abroad, he shared valuable lessons on disaster preparedness, emergency public health response, and building resilient health systems.
Dr. Devojit Kumar Sarma, Scientist-D, ICMR-NIREH, highlighted the growing challenges posed by climate change, including the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves and extreme heat events, and discussed their implications for human health and public health systems.
Dr. R. R. Tiwari, Director, ICMR-NIREH, provided an overview of the significance of World Environment Day and emphasized the importance of nature-based solutions in addressing climate change challenges and promoting environmental sustainability.
The speakers engaged in an interactive session with ICMR scientists, researchers, students, and employees, addressing questions and sharing perspectives on climate resilience, environmental health, and disaster preparedness.
The programme reinforced the need for collective action towards environmental protection, climate adaptation, and safeguarding public health for a sustainable future.
