ICAR–NAARM Marks 50 Years of Shaping Agricultural Leadership

Celebrating 50 years of excellence, ICAR–National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (ICAR–NAARM) marked its Golden Jubilee Year of Establishment with a renewed commitment to building future-ready agricultural professionals.
Presiding over the celebration, Dr. M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR, urged ICAR–NAARM to champion the agri-food systems approach by bringing together research, education and extension. He called for stronger agricultural leadership and competency-based capacity building across sectors, highlighting their vital role in shaping the pathway towards Viksit Bharat 2047.
Padmabhusan Dr. R. S. Paroda, Former DG, ICAR, called for strengthening capacity in innovation systems, agricultural foresight, digital agriculture and innovation-led entrepreneurship.

Strengthening the Global Millet Research Ecosystem

Millets and other ancient grains are gaining renewed global attention—and India is playing a leading role in shaping this movement.
Dr M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE & Director General, ICAR and Chairman, MAHARISHI Steering Committee, visited ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), Hyderabad, to review the progress of MAHARISHI (Millets and Other Ancient Grains International Research Initiative) and participate in its 5th Steering Committee Meeting.
The meeting focused on strengthening international research partnerships, accelerating knowledge and technology exchange, and building coordinated efforts for the wider utilisation of millets and ancient grains. Preparations for MAGIC 2026 were also reviewed.
Dr. Jat emphasised the need to strengthen scientific collaboration, promote innovation and effectively utilise advanced research facilities to address emerging challenges and unlock new opportunities in the millet sector.
At the Advanced Phenomics Laboratory, he reviewed cutting-edge research infrastructure and interacted with scientists on the application of advanced phenotyping approaches for systematic evaluation and faster crop improvement. He also visited the newly established Centralized Millet Tissue Culture and Gene Editing Facility.
The visit reaffirmed ICAR–IIMR’s role as a hub for science, innovation and global collaboration in millet research, supporting India’s vision of taking millets from Shree Anna to a globally recognised crop for a healthier, resilient and sustainable future.

From Woman Farmer to Woman Entrepreneur
Smt. Ranju Prakash transformed her rooftop into a productive urban farm, growing vegetables in repurposed thermocol boxes and later turning the produce into value-added pickles.
ICAR–KVK Munger played a pivotal role through technical guidance on soil media, along with training, demonstrations and field visits focused on value addition, income and employment generation.
A farmer’s initiative, strengthened by KVK knowledge, becomes a pathway to entrepreneurship.

Strategic Partnership to Strengthen Human Capital
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) signed an MoU with the Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurugram, to strengthen capacity building and training for ICAR’s Scientific, Administrative and Finance Officers.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Shanti Kumar Sharma, ADG (HRM), ICAR, and Dr. Arvind Sahay, Director, MDI, Gurugram, in the presence of Dr M.L. Jat, Secretary (DARE) & Director General, ICAR, and Shri Gyanendra D. Tripathi, Additional Secretary (DARE) & Secretary, ICAR.
Aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, the partnership aims to build a skilled, capable and future-ready human capital for agricultural research and innovation.

Dryland Congress 2026, jointly organised by ICAR and ICRISAT, will bring together scientists, policymakers, industry leaders, development partners, startups and innovators to advance resilient, productive and sustainable dryland agriculture.
Scheduled for 10–12 September 2026 at NASC Complex, New Delhi, the Congress will focus on climate-resilient crops and landscapes, resilient farming and seed systems, nutrition, and gender- and youth-centred transformation.
The Congress will also mark 50 years of ICAR–ICRISAT collaboration, highlighting the partnership’s contribution to climate-resilient agriculture and improved livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

Dr. M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE & Director General, ICAR, participated in the inaugural event of the Western Sydney University (WSU) India Campus in New Delhi on 31 August 2026.
Highlighting the ongoing collaboration between ICAR and WSU, Dr. Jat emphasised the potential to further strengthen the partnership and explore new areas of mutual interest. He also announced that Water and Medicinal Plants will be added as priority areas under the Netaji Subhash ICAR International Fellowship from 2026, opening new avenues for advanced research and international academic collaboration.
The programme was graced by H.E. Mr. Chris Minns, Premier of New South Wales, Australia; Mr. Yogendra Upadhyaya, Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh; H.E. Mr. Philip Green, High Commissioner of Australia to India; Mr. Avanish Awasthi, Advisor to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh; and Shri Alok Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh.
Dr. Jat also joined the dignitaries in the plaque unveiling and plant-watering ceremony at the venue, marking the beginning of a new chapter in India–Australia academic and research cooperation
Dr. G. P. Dixit, Director, ICAR-IIPR, Kanpur, outlined future research priorities, and Dr. Shailesh Tripathi, Project Coordinator, AICRP on Rabi Pulses, presented key research progress for 2025–26.
