🧵 HANDLOOMS WEAVE THE LOCAL ECONOMY OF BARGARH

Weaving is a major livelihood in Bargarh, alongside agriculture, supporting communities through cooperative societies and master weavers.

Bargarh is a key hub for traditional Sambalpuri tie-dye (Ikat), cotton, silk and tussar products, with important weaving clusters in Barpali, Bheden, Sohela, Attabira and Bijepur.

The Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, Bargarh, contributes to sustaining this heritage through technical training in textile design.

As highlighted in PHDMA’s publication ପ୍ରଭାବ (Prabhaba), local communities continue to preserve this traditional craft despite the challenges they face.

Supporting handlooms means supporting livelihoods, local economies and Odisha’s cultural heritage. 🌿

The foundation of a credible impact assessment lies in the quality of its data. 📊

Team PHDMA successfully conducted a two-day intensive training for field investigators ahead of the Impact Assessment Study of District Mineral Foundation (DMF) interventions in Koraput district.

The training familiarised investigators with carefully designed questionnaires developed through rigorous theoretical research, pilot field studies, and expert consultations. It also reinforced the PHDMA way of data collection—combining deep observation, meaningful community engagement, and evidence-based documentation to capture stories of change alongside measurable outcomes.

As the field study begins, the assessment aims to document the impact of DMF interventions across priority and other priority sectors, generating robust evidence to inform policy and strengthen development outcomes in Koraput.

KAPADAGANDA SHAWL OF DONGRIA KONDH 🧵

Design unfolds social beliefs & weaving heritage.

In Khambesi village in Muniguda GP under Bissam Cuttack block, Lahani Kundika leads Hingabali SHG, which produces Kapadaganda shawls.

The shawl has a special place in community dancing, where young men and maidens use it as a unique expression and a medium of love.

Its production is a time-honoured tradition passed from generation to generation within the Dongria Kondh PVTG community.

PHDMA’s publication DHARANI documents how the women of Khambesi have helped sustain this rich handloom tradition.

🧵 Narratives: Preserving Handloom Traditions

Odisha’s handlooms are more than ordinary clothes—they are living heritage, carrying the stories, identity and knowledge of generations.

From the Kapadaganda shawl of the Dongria Kondh and natural-dye traditions of Kotpad, to Phoda Kumbha, Gajagamani and the sacred Khandua Pata, every design tells a story.

Through storytelling and cultural narratives, PHDMA helps spotlight the livelihoods of tribal and rural weaving communities while preserving Odisha’s rich handloom identity and regional cultural knowledge.

The Khandua Pata of Nuapatana, with verses from poet Jayadev’s Gitagovinda, beautifully demonstrates how weaving is intertwined with Odisha’s spiritual traditions.

This is not simply fabric. It is culture, memory, livelihood and heritage—woven together.

🧵 HONOURING INDIA'S RICH WEAVING HERITAGE 🇮🇳

National Handloom Day, observed on 7 August, commemorates the historic Swadeshi Movement of 1905 and celebrates the rich legacy of India's handloom tradition.

This year marks the 12th National Handloom Day since its launch in 2015, recognising the invaluable contribution of over 35 lakh handloom workers, with more than 72% being women. Their dedication continues to preserve India's vibrant textile heritage while empowering communities and strengthening rural livelihoods.

India proudly has 106 GI-certified handloom products, reflecting the country's remarkable diversity in weaving traditions.

🌿 BIG PUSH TO ECO-TOURISM & LIVELIHOOD IN ODISHA 🌿

Odisha is gearing up to introduce regulated trekking across national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and forests throughout the state.

The initiative, to be implemented through Ecotour Odisha in designated zones, aims to create unique nature-based experiences while ensuring that the ecological integrity of core forest areas remains protected.

🥾 Focus areas:

✔️ Safe and sustainable trekking routes.
✔️ Conservation-first approach.
✔️ Employment and livelihood opportunities.
✔️ Participation of local communities and tourism stakeholders.

The Forest Department has already started the process of empanelling agencies, tour operators, adventure tourism companies, organisations and community-based enterprises.

Similipal’s tiger population has risen to 35, including 18 females and 17 males. Of them, 19 are rare pseudo-melanistic tigers. The increase reflects stronger protection and habitat conservation efforts.
