It was a privilege to take on the role of moderator for such an erudite panel of speakers, from sectors as varied as education to rehabilitation to automobile to psychiatry. Some of the most eminent names in advocacy for the differently abled persons, were on the panel and it was so enriching to have a meaningful dialogue with them.

I participated as a jury member to evaluate short films on women empowerment at the short film competition organised by women’s organisation, SWAR, during their Nari Shakti@ViksitOdisha conclave last week. I thank the entire team and especially Chandana Das apa, who has been an inspiring presence in my life. She is more of a family member and Im touched that she entrusted this responsibility to me. The key to a developed Odisha is through upliftment of women, by removing barriers to their growth and giving them opportunities that are rightfully theirs. It was an enriching experience listening to accomplished women leaders and esteemed guests from various walks of life.

Unfortunately ignorance still prevails in some parts of India where its convenient to blame the parents (mostly mother), for ‘causing autism ’ due to her faulty nurturing. Genes and science dont matter it seems!

I push back every single time I hear that a working mother, an emotionless mother, covid time increase in screentime and a host of such nonsense reasons cause an intellectual and developmental disability.

Its important to fight this harmful narrative even if its said jokingly. The mother does not cause autism. Its either present in a child or its not. Research is still unable to find the cause of it.

Wheelchair, Assistive Device and Therapeutic toy Distribution Drive. April 2nd is World Autism Day and the whole month of April is celebrated as Autism Acceptance month.

My organization Abhisht Charitable Trust conducted a rehabilitation aid distribution drive at Ranpur NAC, Nayagarh district Odisha. It was a joint initiative of Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (whose patrons are Indian Army Commander Mr.Anil Samal and his father, Mr.Bankanidhi Samal) and Odisha Special Educator federation for Divyang (OSEFD), whose Secretary Mr.Ayusman Choudhry is an active social worker and rehabilitation professional.

We gave educational and therapeutic toy kits and explained the importance of therapy, structured routines and functional/life skills training to parents of children with ID and Autism.
Altogether our drive involved donation of:

✅30 edu-therapy kits for children with ID/Autism
✅30 wheelchairs for kids and adults with locomotor disabilities
✅ 24 hearing aids

We also had a talented specially abled singer, Ms.Srabani Jena, who sang the opening song and was given a bluetooth set to practice her songs with ease.

Our Autism Awareness Day celebration was a huge success and all the beneficiaries went home with their hearts full. It was a meaningful event for me personally as my team and collaborators could make a small change in many lives today. We thank Nayagarh SSEPD department and Officials of Ranpur NAC Block and our entire team of patrons who contributed and stood by us to make this massive distribution drive a reality.
