The Botany Department of Shri R. R. Lalan College, Bhuj, under the UDISHA Initiative, organized an Expert Talk on 5th March 2026
The program began with the introduction of the guest speaker, Mr. Vivek Chauhan, who is working as a Junior Research Fellow (J.R.F.) in the Terrestrial Ecology Division at the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology, Bhuj. The guest was warmly welcomed by Dr. Ekta Joshi, Head of the Botany Department, She emphasized the importance of such expert lectures in expanding students’ academic perspectives and encouraging them to pursue research and careers in botanical sciences.
Mr. Vivek Chauhan then delivered an insightful lecture on the topic “The Mango in India: History, Heritage and Career Opportunities.” During the lecture, he presented an overview of the biological, historical, and cultural importance of mango in India. He explained the taxonomy and diversity of the genus Mangifera and discussed different mango species and cultivars found in India. The lecture also highlighted the linguistic and cultural significance of mango across various regions of the country.
He further explained fossil evidence and scientific studies that trace the ancient origin and evolution of mango in the Indo-Malayan region. The speaker also shared interesting historical stories behind famous mango varieties, including their connections with rulers, traditions, and specific geographical locations. Through references from literature, travel accounts, and horticultural developments, he illustrated how mango spread from India to other parts of the world.

The session concluded with an interactive question–answer discussion, where students actively participated and clarified their queries. A total of 46 students, 3 research scholars, 1 visiting faculty member, and 2 faculty members attended the program.
The lecture proved to be highly informative and enriching, contributing to the academic knowledge and overall development of the students.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Renu Yadav, who expressed sincere gratitude to the guest speaker for sharing his valuable time and knowledge with the students and for making the session engaging and informative.
