A major fire broke out at the four-storeyed tower on the island in Sukhna lake around 7 October 2009 on Wednesday evening. The tower remained engulfed in flames for more than two hours as fire tenders struggled to reach the tower. The situation was finally brought under control around 9.30 pm but by then the tower had been completely destroyed. The exact cause of the fire could not be ascertained till the filing of this report, though short-circuit is believed to be the most probable cause.

"Our men faced difficulty as the structure is in the centre of the lake. Also, thermocol and other decorative material fed the flames. But we used boats to reach the island and managed to douse the flames by using advanced fire-fighting equipment," said M L Sharma, station fire officer. Former mayor Pardeep Chhabra said he noticed the fire around 7.15 pm and alerted the finance secretary and the municipal commissioner.

The tower was renovated recently with extra lights which could have led to overloading of power, resulting in a short-circuit, said an MC official. The entire area was engulfed in smoke and heavy traffic jam was witnessed outside the lake as Karva Chauth revellers panicked and scampered to leave the area.

The tower

The tower on the island of the lake was set up in early 1980s at the time of the Junior Asian Rowing Championship. The entire structure was made of steel and the flooring was wooden, which caught fire.
