You Think You’ve Seen Mahendravadi? Look Again. 👀
கோயில் சிதைந்தாலும்… கலை சிதையவில்லை!
மகேந்திரவாடியில் மறைந்திருக்கும் பல்லவச் சிற்பம்?

Most travellers know Mahendravadi for its Pallava rock-cut cave temple. But hidden beside this seemingly forgotten monument is a fascinating Ganesha relief from a later phase of Pallava art.

The cave itself is associated with Mahendravarman I, while the Ganesha relief is considered a later addition within the Pallava period. An important art-historical study specifically notes that the Ganesha relief adjoining the cave is not contemporary with the original cave, but was added later during the Pallava period.

And this is exactly why we don't skip forgotten monuments because they look neglected.

🌿 Thirupazhanam — A Temple of Quiet Beauty

Some temples don’t need grandeur to make an impression. Thirupazhanam Apathsahayeswarar Temple draws you in with its elegant proportions, twin Rajagopurams, sculptural richness, and the beautifully composed details of its vimana. The temple is also the second of the seven Sapthasthanam temples and a Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam, sung by both Thirugnanasambandar and Appar.

Look closely, and you’ll discover Dakshinamurti, Gajasamharamurti, Veena Dakshinamurti, and other exquisite forms woven into the architecture. Its history also carries deep Chola connections, with inscriptions associated with Aditya I, Parantaka I and later rulers.

Hidden away near Natteri, this remarkable temple preserves over a century of Pallava–Chola history in its walls. Its inscriptions reveal changing rulers, village administration, temple endowments, water arrangements, and the lives of people who lived here centuries ago.

At a glance 👀

The earliest securely documented inscription here dates to Kampavarman's 20th regnal year, while later records are from several Chola rulers.

What if a Pallava king himself left a poem on the temple wall naming the person who built it?
📍 Location: Sri Veerateeswarar Temple, Tiruttani, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

At Tiruttani, an inscription associated with Aparajita Varman records that Nambi Appi constructed the temple in stone. This makes the temple an unusually valuable landmark for understanding late-Pallava structural architecture.
