Kosapet is the only area in Chennai where the terracotta idols are made. This area is named after the Kulalar community people who moved from area of present high court on request of the government during 1961. in Kosapet.Generally Kulalar caste all over India are involved in making bricks, idols and pottery. The word "Kulalar" literally means "potter" in Indian languages. The craft is being practiced in Chennai for more than 50 years. Initially the artisans were making idols from only clay but now they are using variety of materials to make Idols.
