Storytelling session - September 16th - For ages 6-9, we are reading the book by Devdutt Pattanaik - Gauri and the talking cow. The session is to be conducted by Mrs.Muthu Annamalai, the inspiring Kathalaya certified professional.

Author's view of book:

Why is the cow useful to everyone?
How are the earth and the cow similar?
Why is Gauri another name for a cow?

Little Gauri thinks milk comes from packets, till she meets Sweety the talking cow. Sweety tells Gauri about the first cow on earth, Surabhi, and how she provided so many useful things to man: fuel, manure, medicine and shelter. Sweety narrates stories about a king who found good luck because he gifted cows to many people and how another king was turned into a lizard because he was not careful about who he gave his cows to! Sweety also tells Gauri how Krishna the cowherd, looked after his beloved animals and why Kali decided to comb her hair.

A book review by a parent who writes with genuine interest....

Samira’s Awful Lunch written by Bharati Jagannathan and Preeti Krishnamurthy made an enjoyable and educative reading for me, my wife and most importantly for our 7 year daughter who is literally playing Samira’s role, to our utter helplessness and frustration. I think this problem of getting our kids understand the value and need of having nutritious food is faced by many of parents like us. This becomes all the more problematic in nuclear family as in joint family system elderly members used to be of great help in feeding the little ones.

I could see the mischievous smile on my daughter’s face when I read the story to her. Kids love watching insects, birds, animals and using them as ‘teachers’ for Samira is a commendable way of communicating the children of the importance of eating right and regularly. Many recent reports by Unicef and WHO point out the dangerous levels of deficiency of vital minerals in kids in India, hence books like this can really play positive role in educating the parents as well as kids about the need of having a healthy attitude to our eating habits.
