The Surveyor General of India, Shri Shailesh Kumar Sinha, attended the Annual Hydrographic Conference 2026 at the National Hydrographic Office (NHO) as the Chief Guest.

The conference brought together perspectives from the terrestrial and marine geospatial domains, with Rear Admiral Peush Pawsey, Chief Hydrographer to the Government of India, representing NHO.

Addressing the conference, the Surveyor General of India highlighted the importance of Land-Sea Integration and the role of trusted, accurate and interoperable geospatial information in advancing sustainable development, the Blue Economy and disaster resilience.

He highlighted the importance of integrated data generation using LiDAR, Multibeam sensors, Satellite-based solutions, in generating trusted and interoperable geospatial applications and decision-making.

The Surveyor General of India emphasized the need to leverage the complementary strengths of the Survey of India and NHO and other national geospatial institutions to generate trusted, authoritative and quality geospatial data across terrestrial and marine domains, enabling a shared geospatial vision “from land to sea, from the surface to the seabed” towards achieving the goal of Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat 2047.

The Surveyor General of India, Shri Shailesh Kumar Sinha, called upon the Hon’ble Governor of Uttarakhand, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Gurmit Singh, at Lok Bhavan, Dehradun.

During the meeting, the Surveyor General briefed the Hon’ble Governor on the Survey of India’s ongoing survey and mapping initiatives and highlighted the transformative role of geospatial technologies in supporting infrastructure development, natural resource management and disaster risk reduction in Uttarakhand.

The Hon’ble Governor appreciated the role of Survey of India in the development of the nation. He also emphasized for the use of Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Technology with a vision for the next 100 years to enable India become a global leader in the geospatial sector.

On the occasion, the Surveyor General presented a copy of the Constitution of India to the Hon’ble Governor and recalled that the first 1,000 copies of the Constitution of India were printed at Survey of India, Dehradun.

A meeting that beautifully connected India’s constitutional heritage with its geospatial and technological future.

Survey of India held a virtual bilateral meeting with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Philippines, under the 2025–2028 Programme of Cooperation (POC) to discuss collaboration on “AI for Geospatial Technologies” on 13 August 2026.

Representing Survey of India, Sh. Dharmendra Kumar Singh, Deputy Surveyor General (NIGST) and Sh. Pardeep Singh, Deputy Surveyor General (SGO, Tech), along with SGO officers, participated in the discussions with officials from DOST, Philippines.

The meeting focused on identifying priority areas, designating focal points, outlining indicative timelines, and defining concrete next steps for joint initiatives in geospatial science and technology.
The engagement reflects the commitment of India and the Philippines to strengthening international cooperation and exploring the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence in geospatial technologies.

Survey of India, through the Madhya Pradesh Geospatial Directorate (MPGD), has successfully completed the drone survey and geospatial data processing for the Ujjain Simhastha Area in collaboration with BISAG-N (Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics).

The project covered approximately 309 sq. km. Through meticulous planning, coordinated field operations, and advanced photogrammetric processing, high-resolution Orthorectified Imagery (ORI) and Digital Surface Models (DSM) were generated with comprehensive Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC).

The geospatial datasets will serve as a vital resource for planning, infrastructure development, crowd management, disaster preparedness, and other administrative activities associated with the forthcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Ujjain, enabling informed decision-making and efficient event management.

The Surveyor General of India, Shri Shailesh Kumar Sinha, Leader of the Indian Delegation, actively participated in the opening day of the 16th Session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.

Representing India, he deliberated upon various agenda items, reaffirming the country's commitment to advancing the global geospatial agenda through international cooperation and the effective use of geospatial information for sustainable development.

In his capacity as Co-Chair of UN-GGIM Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP), Shri Sinha also articulated the perspectives and priorities of the Asia-Pacific Regional Committee during the deliberations, reflecting the region's collective vision on key geospatial issues.

India reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with Member States to strengthen global geospatial information management, foster international collaboration, and leverage geospatial information to support resilience, sustainable development, and shared prosperity.

Map Awareness Workshop Inspires Young Minds in Dehradun

The Indian National Cartographic Association (INCA), Dehradun Branch, organised a Map Awareness Workshop on 29 July 2026 at the Survey of India Auditorium, Survey Estate, Dehradun.

The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 350 students and teachers representing various schools of Dehradun and Mussoorie.

The programme was inaugurated by Shri Sandeep Shrivastava, Additional Surveyor General, Survey of India, who highlighted the importance of geospatial awareness among students and academia and emphasized the role of such initiatives in promoting map literacy.

Expert lectures were delivered by officers from Survey of India (SoI), the National Hydrographic Office (NHO), and the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun on Map Reading, Nautical Charts, and Satellite Imagery. Participants also explored survey instruments, topographic maps, and nautical charts through live demonstrations.

The workshop concluded with an interactive session, reflecting the keen interest and enthusiasm of students and teachers in understanding maps, geospatial technologies, satellite imagery, and nautical charts.

INCA Map Quiz – Phase I will be organised by INCA, Dehradun Branch on 8 August 2026, providing another opportunity for young learners to strengthen their geospatial knowledge.

Survey of India highlights the remarkable evolution of positioning technology in India—from the era of chains, celestial observations, and triangulation surveys to satellite-based real-time positioning with centimeter-level accuracy.

Over more than two centuries, advancements in surveying instruments, geodetic techniques, GPS, DGPS, and the nationwide CORS Network have transformed how locations are determined, significantly improving the speed, precision, and efficiency of geospatial data collection.

Today, through modern positioning technologies and digital geospatial infrastructure, Survey of India continues to strengthen the nation's mapping capabilities and support informed planning, governance, and development.
