Indian Air Force Academy: Journey of a Cadet to Becoming a Commissioned Officer
‘Shram Se Siddhi’, which means achievement through diligence, is the heartfelt motto of the revered Indian Air Force Academy, the officers’ training institute for the Indian Air Force. Situated in Dundigal, the academy is the foundation of training for both pilots and ground duty officers of the Indian Air Force. The Indian Air Force Academy formally came into existence on 8 October 1932. Its foundation stone was laid by the then President of India, Dr. Zakir Hussain. The Air Force Academy (AFA) at Dundigal has built a formidable reputation as the premier training institution of the Indian Air Force. It is situated 43 km from Hyderabad.
The academy is the breeding ground for future warriors that provides training to all the fresh entrants of the Flying and Ground Duty branches of the Indian Air Force in one place. The cadets are divided into flying faculty and ground training faculty based on the branch they have been selected for. The cadets at the academy are trained to inculcate etiquette and the service code of conduct that is expected of an officer. A closer understanding of the branch-wise training helps articulate the life of a cadet at the Indian Air Force Academy and their journey to becoming a commissioned officer.
The Air Force Academy imparts training to Flying, Ground Duty (Technical & Non-technical) Branches. It prepares you, both in mind and spirit, to take on the responsibilities of an Air Force officer. Apart from developing the required skills, you are also trained to inculcate the service code of conduct and etiquette that are expected of an officer. The curriculum encompasses a plethora of techniques like projects, case studies, On-job training, presentations, debates, book reviews, guest lectures, public speaking, drill, games, swimming, weapon training, yoga, field craft training, and cultural activities to enhance the knowledge base as well as ensure the overall development of a trainee as an officer.
The following are the types of training conducted at AFA:
FLYING TRAINING
If you have joined the Flying Branch, training is divided into Stage 0, I and II. Each stage gradually takes you from fundamental to more complex levels of aviation.
Before the commencement of flying training, you will first be provided technical training on the trainer aircraft. This involves imparting theoretical understanding and then a practical demonstration on all systems of the aircraft. You will also be required to undertake a programme in aviation medicine. Apart from a complete medical examination, you undergo a desensitization programme to prevent / overcome air sickness with the help of yoga. The programme also includes practical demonstrations in a high altitude simulator.
Trainees other than NDA cadets are first sent for Pre-Flying Training (Stage - 0) at AFA for six months before commencing STAGE –I training. After completing Stage - 0 for Stage - I, they are trained at the Air Force Academy. Pilot trainees are trifurcated into Fighter, Transport, and Helicopter streams after completion of Stage - II training and being commissioned as officers. Stage - III training for each stream is undertaken at their respective flying training establishments. On completion of Stage - III training, they begin operational flying at the squadrons/units assigned to them.
GROUND DUTY OFFICERS TRAINING
The Indian Air Force Academy conducts basic training for all cadets of Ground Duty Tech and Non-Tech branches for 6 months. On completion of six months of training at AFA, the cadets of Ground Duty (Tech) proceed to AFTC for their specialist training. The specialist training for all Ground Duty (Non-Technical) branches of the Indian Air Force continues at AFA, which implies If you have joined the Administrative, Logistics, Accounts, Education, Weapon Systems, or Meteorology branch, you will be trained at the Air Force Academy for a year. The training curriculum is aimed at exposing the trainees to branch specific professional subjects and military training in order to prepare them for a career ahead.
The Indian Air Force Academy stands as the crucible of aspiring cadets' transformation into dedicated commissioned officers. Guided by the motto "Shram Se Siddhi, it hones skills and inculcates the conduct of officers. Since the beginning, it has nurtured individuals, instilling comradery and commitment. The Air Force Academy's legacy persists as it forges officers, adeptly blending skills and values for exceptional service.

The year 1950 is remembered as a special year, when India became a Republic nation and the Indian Air Force dropped its ‘Royal’ prefix. At this time, IAF possessed six fighter squadrons of Spitfires, Vampires and Tempests, operating from Kanpur, Poona, Ambala and Palam, one B-24 bomber squadron, one C-47 Dakota transport squadron, one AOP flight, a communications squadron at Palam and a growing training organization.
