The Guyana High Commission in New Delhi recently hosted a Diplomatic Reception to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Guyana's Independence and 60 years of diplomatic relations between Guyana and India. The event brought together members of the Diplomatic Corps, senior officials of the Government of India, business leaders, representatives of partner institutions, and members of the Guyanese diaspora.
High Commissioner Dharamkumar Seeraj delivered the feature address, reflecting on Guyana's six-decade journey as an independent nation. He reaffirmed Guyana's unwavering commitment to international law, sovereignty, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. He also highlighted Guyana's emergence as the world's fastest-growing economy and its global leadership on food security, energy security, and climate security, through initiatives such as the Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030, the Global Biodiversity Alliance, and the CARICOM Agri-Food Systems Agenda.
On bilateral ties, the High Commissioner celebrated six decades of friendship between Guyana and India, highlighting expanding cooperation in healthcare, energy, agriculture, technology, and education, alongside a shared commitment to sustainable development and South-South cooperation.
The Honourable Shri Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles of India, the Chief Guest, reaffirmed the enduring friendship between Guyana and India and expressed India's commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation for the mutual benefit of both countries.
The evening also celebrated the richness of Guyanese culture through captivating steel-pan performances of Guyanese and Caribbean music, a vibrant performance by the Indian Air Force Band, and displays highlighting distinguished Guyanese who have excelled in the fields of arts, sports, diplomacy, and literature. Locally produced Guyanese products were also showcased, while guests enjoyed a tasting of Guyana's world-renowned rums and authentic Guyanese cuisine, offering a true taste of Guyana's culture, heritage, and warm hospitality.
