28 August is the Birth Anniversary of Shri Raghupati Sahay better known under his pen name Firaq Gorakhpuri (28 August 1896 - 3 March 1982). He was a writer, critic and a luminous star in the realm of Urdu poetry. He revolutionized Indian poetry by blending Indian sensibility and philosophical depth into the Urdu poetic tradition. He was awarded Sahitya Akademi Award (1960), Padma Bhushan (1968), and Jnanpith Award (1969). Some of his notable works are Gul-e-Naghma, Gul-e-Ranaa, Mashaal, Rooh-e-Kayenaat etc.

Sahitya Akademi has instituted Sahitya Akademi yuva Puraskar to encourage young writers ( less than 35 years of Age) in 24 recognised languages of India.
