40 years ago, the UN Declaration on the Right to Development (1986) affirmed that the human person is the central subject of development, an active participant and beneficiary.
As women’s rights and their role in the economy gain greater attention, it is worth returning to these words, keeping rights, agency, participation and voice at the centre of how we shape economic and social policies.
Four decades on, this is the work that remains: ensuring women are not only included in development, but have the rights, agency and voice to shape it.
