The Enabling Unit of Maitreyi College was established under the guidelines of UGC-HEPSN Scheme and became functional from 1st September, 2011. The objective of the flagship programme is to work for the welfare of and the overall upliftment of Divyangajan (Persons with Disabilities). It acts as a support system and guidance for differently-abled students and teachers alike. The unit comprises five
faculty members including its coordinator. To ensure inclusivity and accessibility, the Enabling Unit uses a comprehensive approach to facilitate an inclusive and smooth induction of differently-abled students into the extra-curricular and academic activities of the college. It provides computers and notebooks equipped with the latest assistive technology such as Lex Air Camera, NVDA, OCR, JAWS etc. Enabling Unit is equipped with three printers, three computers and three notebooks. The facilities are being well utilized by PwD candidates for internet and printing purpose. It also has a โWriter and Reader Bankโ to fulfil the basic necessities of reading and writing. Importantly, this facility is also being availed by other schools/colleges. In addition, two wheelchairs of Enabling Unit caters to the needs of orthopedically challenged persons. Enabling Unit aids prospective PwD students at every step of the admission process by helping them with enrolment, administrative guidelines, and scholarships offered by the university. It also provides advisory, counselling and guidance to students, parents, teachers and administrative staff on regular basis. The Enabling Unit organizes Indian languages-based skill development workshops/training programs and certificate courses to overcome the language barrier. The Unit also started its YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/enablingunitmaitreyicollege), where there are more than 50 video lectures prepared by Enabling Unit with the support of experts in the concerned field and uploaded. By these videos, more than 21500 persons across the globe have benefitted and have been sensitized towards various disabilities. Moreover, Unit regularly organizes seminars, workshops, conferences, and Faculty Development Programmes at the national and international level often in collaboration with other organizations and institutions known for their expertise, to encourage engagement and research in these issues.
