The EU-India FTA has just moved one step closer to the finish line, with the European Commission formally submitting its proposals to the Council of the European Union for approval. The aim is to speed up the implementation of the FTA, which is crucial at a time of geopolitical uncertainty and growing pressure on the global trading system.
Marking a historic leap for two of the world’s largest economies and democracies, the FTA stands as the largest trade deal either side has ever negotiated. Once in force, the agreement will improve market access, reduce tariffs, tackle unnecessary trade barriers, and provide predictable rules for trade and investment between the EU and India. The agreement also underscores the EU’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with key partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
With its proposals, the Commission is seeking Council's approval to sign the agreements, which will then require European Parliament's consent before its conclusion and entry into force. Meanwhile, the Indian authorities are progressing through their own internal ratification procedures in parallel.
