The second edition of the Indo French Innovation Network (IFIN) took place on the 28th of July. Co-organized with Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms and LINK Innovations, this edition has gathered more than 80 attendees from academia, corporate and start-up institutions.
Split into 3 parallel breakout rooms; the participants have actively discussed during the start-ups' pitch sessions to identify synergies and potential areas of collaboration.
These fruitful exchanges have been followed by presentations from the French Institute in India regarding funding opportunities via Indo French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research and Dr Srini Kaveri and the team from CNRS News and their industry partners illustrating academia-industry research partnership using this tool.
IFIN aims to bring Indo- French academia researchers, innovators and corporates closer. It has been well received by all attendees for initiating opportunities for collaboration and connection among people sharing the same fields of interest.

[A success story of Indo-French scientific collaboration] Researchers from Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine, Bangalore and Institut Curie, Orsay have jointly developed a microtubule sensor.
This sensor will be a tool for researchers to study the modifications in the structure of the cells, thereby helping to identify potential new cancer therapeutic drugs.
The project has been funded by Indo French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research, a joint initiative from the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India
CEFIPRA has been supporting Indo-French projects in the field of Science & Technology since 1985.

World Microbiome Day – June 27
June 27 is declared as World Microbiome Day from 2018 to create awareness on importance of microbes in the environment and human body. The microbes are omnipresent and they are the key drivers of this world. They are largely helpful to the human beings except a very very small proportion that cause diseases. But unfortunately, in last few years the microbes are largely projected as harmful agents in the media. Every product has a tag saying antimicrobial, antibacterial, etc., It is surprising and worrying to note even wall paints and other common household products are including antimicrobial compounds. COVID-19 further increased the projection of microbes as the killers and destroyers of humanity.
In recent days, there is increasing awareness on protecting the biodiversity of plants and animals, restoration of forests, global climate change and so on. In parallel, the knowledge of microbiome, their diversity, their role in our day-to-day activities are largely not taken to common public. There is a huge destruction of microbial communities in nature and also in human body that plays a major role in global climate change, agriculture, forestry and human health and diseases. The number of microbial cells and genes in our human body outnumbers the number of human cells and genes by several fold. But unfortunately, less or no attention is provided for understanding their role in human health and disease. Particularly, the clinical physicians are completely unaware and that lead to increasing and surplus use of antibiotics.
Particularly this year in the advent of COVID-19, I am worried on the emormous and uncontrolled use of disinfectants in the name of defence against SARS-CoV-2 virus. Toxic disinfectants are being released into the environment that will have profound impact on the microbial diversity in water, air, soil, plants and human body. It is important to make assessment of the released disinfectants, soap molecules, antimicrobial compounds in the environment and make strategies to remove or detoxify them.
