Eighty years of independence. A journey that has shaped not just a nation, but the world. Chargé d’Affaires Tinna Sveinsdóttir shares Iceland’s warmest wishes to India on this special day.

From the growing momentum of the India-EFTA TEPA to the meeting of our Prime Ministers in Oslo earlier this year, the friendship between Iceland and India continues to deepen in meaningful ways.

As India marks this important milestone, Iceland stands with you in celebrating not just the journey so far, but the extraordinary road ahead.

On International Youth Day, Chargé d'Affaires Tinna Sveinsdóttirr joined a panel hosted by Raisina House, UNESCO India, and UNEP to explore why youth agency is central to building sustainable societies and a green economy.

The evening brought together diplomats, youth leaders, and change-makers for an conversation about climate action, equitable development, and the role young people must play in shaping the policies that will define their future.

Tinna highlighted the opportunities for Iceland and India to work together and learn from one another. While our countries differ in many ways, we have much to share when it comes to sustainability and empowering the next generation.

Youth agency is not only about giving young people a voice — it is about ensuring they have the knowledge, opportunities and resources to turn their ideas into action.

A timely reminder that the green transition must be built with young people, not simply for them.

Did you know that Reykjavík, a city of just 250,000 people, hosts one of the biggest Pride events in the world?

Reykjavík Pride began in 1993 as a small but powerful protest to demand freedom and human rights. The first Pride Parade followed in August 2000. Today, it draws over 100,000 guests from around the world every August, making it Iceland's biggest annual event.

The world's biggest small Pride is tomorrow on 8 August.

Iceland is a staunch believer that human rights are for everyone, regardless of s*xual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or s*x characteristics.

Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

Ambassador Benedikt Höskuldsson spoke to The Telegraph about how Iceland is turning climate action into economic opportunity, and what that means for India.

From Carbfix's pioneering technology that permanently mineralises CO2 into basalt rock, to the production of green methanol as a sustainable aviation fuel, Iceland has built one of the most comprehensive industrial decarbonisation ecosystems in the world. And increasingly, that expertise is finding a home in India.

A strategic memorandum of understanding between Carbon Iceland International and JSW Steel signals the beginning of something significant: large-scale green methanol production in Maharashtra, with the goal of starting production by 2029.

Chargé d'Affaires Tinna Sveinsdóttir attended a wonderful evening at the Swedish Ambassador's residence yesterday. Nordic Music in the Monsoon, hosted jointly by the Embassies of Norway and Sweden, brought together Hindustani classical music and Nordic melodies in a truly memorable musical encounter.

Music has always been one of the oldest bridges between cultures, and last night was a beautiful reminder of how much India and the Nordic countries share.

Congratulations to our colleagues at the Embassy of Sweden and the Embassy of Norway for a beautiful event.

On 1 July 2026, Ambassador Benedikt Höskuldsson presented his Letter of Credence to Her Excellency The Rt Hon Dame Cindy Kiro, Governor-General of New Zealand, formally becoming Iceland's Ambassador to New Zealand. The ceremony at Government House marks the extension of Ambassador Höskuldsson's accreditation, alongside his existing roles as Iceland's Ambassador to India, Sri Lanka and Nepal, and underscores Iceland's commitment to strengthening ties across South Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.

Iceland and New Zealand share long-standing cooperation on ocean governance, renewable energy, and climate action, alongside growing trade and people-to-people links. Ambassador Höskuldsson looks forward to building on this foundation and deepening the friendship between Iceland, New Zealand, and the wider region — including Nepal and India — in the years ahead.
