Atmashakti Trust

Atmashakti Trust Atmashakti is engaged in a long term mission to bring the benefits of government programmes to the disadvantaged sections of rural India. Malti Singh and Mr. M.

Atmashakti was established in July 1995 with a broad mandate to support a mix of development initiatives in rural areas as well as urban slums. Since the principal trustees Mrs. Singh were actively engaged in supporting/working for other voluntary agencies, the trust remained dormant till 2008. Mrs Malti Singh was President of Amnesty International (Indian Section) for several years and later a me

mber of the International Mandate Review Committee. She was also a co-founder of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) and its first Chief Executive. She was also President of the Delhi School of Music. In 1989 Mr. M.M. Singh gave up a fourteen-year career in the corporate world and chose to volunteer his time and efforts to the ‘development sector’ (a hazardous and addictive occupation that he is still stuck with!). Most of this time was spent volunteering with and subsequently growing and mentoring SRUTI (Society for Rural Urban and Tribal Initiative). A part of the experience gained with SRUTI was disaster relief and rehabilitation. When the Kosi River flooded its banks in North Bihar in September 2008 resulting in widespread devastation, Atmashakti Trust mobilized over Rs.12 lakhs to provide relief and rehabilitation to around 1200 families in one the worst affected areas. Atmashakti is now engaged in a long term mission to bring the benefits of government programmes to the poorest of the poor with a focus on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and Food Security.

Education cannot wait. Act now! Photos from Sonbhadra District, Uttar Pradesh.

As we progress with the fact-finding survey in other states, a common trend of inadequate school infrastructure is slowly emerging in all areas. It is frightening to see the mammoth work that is required to bring them to a usable condition.

We are not talking about tables, chairs, the availability of teachers or smart classrooms. Some of the photographs depict classes being conducted in the open field and on the verandah. There is NO CLASSROOM!!

In most places, there is a lock on toilets meant for girls. Water access is an issue. There is no kitchen area. The pictures show the ground reality.

Can we dream of a good future for our children with the current infrastructure – NO
Can we do something about it – YES!

We request that the government investigate school infrastructure and take immediate steps to improve them. Let’s us highlight these issues and ask for ACTION.

Education cannot wait. Act Now!

The school in Kharkhot village/panchayat is from Class 1-5. The school has only 2 classrooms with a verandah. There is no separate kitchen, and meals are cooked in a spare classroom. Meals are not served according to the menu. One saving grace is that there is availability of water in the school.

As you can see in the video, there is no awareness of the learning recovery programme. Raju says that there is much to be done about school infrastructure.

Sharing some photographs from the fact-finding survey in Chhattisgarh as part of our "Education cannot wait. Act now!" campaign.

All the pictures highlight the deplorable conditions of the government schools. It is unimaginable that in this present day and age, we are still struggling with such bad infrastructure.

The pictures are reasons enough to understand the status of education in India.

Yesterday, we shared a post on how 17% of children in Rayagada District, Odisha, are unaware of the Learning Recovery Programme (LRP).

Today, we are sharing data from Kandhamal District, which highlights completely different results. The data is a huge point of reflection for all of us - how with proper direction and implementation, LRP could be made most effective.

Thank you, DM Kandhamal, for monitoring the LRP personally and ensuring its outreach to all children. If there is a will, there is a way.

We request CMO Odisha to ensure timely and strict implementation of LRP in all parts of Odisha.

Our fact-finding exercise in Rayagada District, Odisha highlights the Learning Recovery Programme's poor implementation (LRP). Please follow us as we share the status of LRP in other districts in the coming days.

Where LRP is non-existent, we need immediate intervention to start the programmes, and where it is already in place – we need to ensure its effective functioning.

Education helps to shape children's minds and hearts, empower, change social norms and attitudes, to think independently, to speak out, and to be strong and free.

The pandemic has harmed the learning of more than 90 % of the world’s children – the largest disruption in history.

We want you to join in our efforts to bridge the gap by getting our children back to school by appealing to the government to implement an effective plan

On 20th October, Mahila Sangram Samiti (MSS) Sundergarh organized a meeting with the youths to form a hockey team in Telighana village, Kutra Block, Sundargarh District. Following the formation of the team, a fun hockey match was organized in which 17 youths (girls & boys) participated in the match.

It was interesting to see small children joining the fun and trying their hands on the field.
