This is the decade of action and this year will enable us to accelerate progress towards the localisation of SDGs and a sustainable future for the human kind. You will together orchestrate a pro youth vision to ensure a thriving and equitable future for all.

Our process of urbanisation is beginning. The cities we make have to be sustainable, for public transportation, cycling and walking, cities that recycle waste and water, where citizens are able to interact with each other and where challenges and opportunities impact and benefit the youth.

Over the course of two days, the event successfully brought together over 20 partners and approximately 150 participants from around the globe, including representatives from 35 Indian cities. The event's ability to bring together such a diverse group of stakeholders is a testament to its importance in advancing sustainable practices and promoting circularity.

The conference was a great opportunity for , , and .
🌍 Key takeaways are:
💡 Passionate leadership and out-of-the-box thinking are crucial for cities to become circular.

💡 Decentralised and centralized solutions, along with long-term planning, are crucial for circularity.
💡 Peer circles provided a valuable platform for cities to openly discuss their challenges and find appropriate solutions providers.
💡 Enabling factors and policy context for the circular economy at the city level are in place, political will and community engagement are necessary for improved performance.
💡 Training, skills, and capacity development is essential for cities to become drivers of circularity

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Mr G Asok Kumar , Mr J B Ravindra, Mr Dinesh D Jagdale for taking out time from their busy schedule and supporting the conference through their insightful contributions and in-person presence. Their enlightening fireside chat and exceptional leadership in closing the event will leave a lasting impact on all the attendees, for a long time to come.

, an unexpected outcome of modernization is followed by economic changes related to well-being, , leisure, social engagements, and . Amid rapid urbanization in , urban villages, periurban areas, and villages need to identify their growth.

This will make urbanization uniform while meeting the needs of societies and people. Nestled within a host city or at the fringes are unique brown-field planning zones representing a contradiction with the regular urban plans and local planning regimes, quite abruptly standing outside of the city’s mainstream building and urban design regulations and guidelines despite their inextricable link to the city’s climate, production and culture.

These in-between zones have a fluidity to bridge the urban-rural divide and have converted into unique character areas to play a vital supportive role for cities and demand to be looked through the lens of and and documented as examples of variance.

is on its way to transitioning towards being more urbanized and the belief that India lives in villages and not in cities is changing rapidly. The new trends call for more attention towards our policies and while the broader framework of the policy discourse is that cities no longer remain a reflection of poverty or bottlenecks; but should become the symbols of efficiency speed, and scale.

It is time to look at urbanization as an opportunity rather than a threat. The overall urban policy must have three distinct focus: improve living conditions, increase urban investment, and, better management and governance.

Leave NO one BEHIND. The National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) has signed an with Urban Village Charitable Trust to develop a vision for for urban , periurban areas, and villages, through shared research and programs that bring together the intellect of professionals and academia towards a better tomorrow.

Presenting you with the third challenge of the ‘LiFE weekly challenge’:

“Utilize the waste from around your home to make something original and inventive using the do-it-yourself (DIY) approach”

Why should we take up this challenge?

Reusing and recycling materials has various advantages:

♒ Conserves water, energy, and minerals by reducing the need to mine them.

♻ Recycling at a large level creates jobs, which boosts the economy

💡 Encourages creativity and innovation: Discovering new ways to reuse materials can lead to innovative products and solutions that can address many environmental and social issues.

🔃 Promotes sustainability reduces the environmental effect and boosts the economy and society.

🌟 Overall, utilizing waste and reusing materials can help to promote sustainability, reduce environmental impact, and create economic and social benefits.

The development of our cities has long overlooked the needs and concerns of the youngest amongst us. and their are a group of stakeholders who are most vulnerable in the spaces of our neighbourhoods and cities. Our cities need to be built for the comforts and health of young children and it is time that practitioners implement this understanding on ground. Young child-friendly cities is an emerging field, and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) endeavours to make cities for young children and caregivers by mainstreaming their needs in .

To achieve this objective, ’s Infant, Toddler and Caregiver-Friendly Neighbourhoods () Capacity Building Programme, being implemented with support from Bernard van Leer Foundation (), has developed capacity building modules and trained government officials on different aspects of young children and caregiver-friendly neighbourhoods.

Five training delivery agencies working under the programme, organised training of government officials from different parts of the country in February 2023 and built their capacity on developing data baseline for young children, ITC-centric city level dashboard, designing public spaces and streets for ITC and proximity of care-approach and tools. These agencies include All India Institute of Local self Government, Mumbai; Centre for Good Governance , Dr R S Tolia Uttarakhand Academy of Administration, Nainital; Engineering Staff College of India, Hyderabad; Kerala Institute of Local Administration - KILA,Thrissur; and Regional Centre for Urban & Environmental Studies Lucknow (RCUES) Lucknow.

The ITCN also conducted a workshop with select city officials and partner training delivery agencies on ‘Challenges in Data Mapping for Developing Strategies for ITC-Centric Planning’ highlighting data baseline toolkit, data sources and availability of data. The discussion provided better understanding on availability of data with ULBs and other departments, and challenges in data mapping.
