We have some exciting news to share!
Today, on , the National Institute of Urban Affairs and Namami Gange are thrilled to announce a significant milestone in our efforts towards holistic management of India’s urban rivers.
NIUA and NMCG are embarking on a journey to prepare a total of 60 Urban River Management Plans for members of India’s River Cities Alliance (RCA).
RCA is a platform for member cities to have dedicated discussions, exchange of knowledge and best practices, and joint collaborations, for enhanced urban river management.
The project will be carried out with World Bank India's assistance, underscoring the importance and global significance of the project.
We will be officially engaging a number of partners for implementing this project. An official announcement will be made shortly. We count on the support of like-minded partners in this journey.

23/09/2023
To celebrate our rivers on , National Institute of Urban Affairs and Namami Gange hosted an Urban Rivers Partners Meeting where like-minded partners came together to reflect on the challenges and possible solutions for urban river management.
Here are some of the key takeaways from our discussions:
👉 Urban planning and river management are intrinsically linked. As cities grow, the planning needs to be sensitive to the river’s needs. In return, the river will provide manifold benefits to cities. A classical win-win situation.
👉 A river is a system of interconnected elements. Understanding the interactions between these elements is crucial to arrive at robust urban river management models.
👉 Creating a robust database is the foundation for informed decision-making. Good quality data is vital for understanding river ecosystems, monitoring changes, and crafting sustainable solutions.
👉 Treating wastewater is important. However, equally more important is reusing it to reduce stress on freshwater resources, and ensure enough water for ecological purposes.
👉 Far too often, social aspects are sidelined in river management. Recognizing the Gender Equality, Diversity, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) element is essential for sustainable models of urban river management.

The Himalayas, known as the water towers of Asia, the third pole and home to many of us, are experiencing speedy and unplanned urbanisation, perturbing the hydrological regimes of Himalayan watersheds
Recent extreme climatic events have highlighted the marginalisation of mountain regions in India, particularly in the context of mainstream planning. However, avoiding a cut-copy-paste approach to urban planning is essential, where solutions designed for the plains are indiscriminately applied to the hills. The need for more specific contextual information and data-driven evidence in the technical and planning guidelines for the hilly region is concerning. It raises questions about our sensitivity towards the Hill states’ immense challenges and our capacity to address these issues effectively.
As part of the Parvat Manthan Form: Manifestation of Clean and Sustainable Hill States, National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) along with BORDA South Asia and Integrated Mountain Initiative is organising the webinar on "How to Plan Resilient Himalayan Cities". The objective is to build a conversation about contextual and specialised urban planning for the Indian Himalayan Region and to identify specific areas of investigation and research which can be used as an advocacy and communication tool by these development practitioners, state administrations and think tanks.
Join us in the webinar to listen, learn, and lend support to the vibrant voices of the expert panellist.
